Commentary

Commentary on Aeschylus: Eumenides (Aeschylus. Eumenides. Sidgwick, Arthur, editor. Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1887.)

704. κερδῶν ἄθικτον , incorruptible. The gen. belongs to a special (though common) class of usages with negative adjectives, e. g. ἄλυπος ἄτης Soph. Εl. 990, ἀψόφητος κωκυμάτων Αi. 321, ἄσκευος ἀσπίδων Ε1. 36; a combination of gen. of reference and gen. of separation.

705. ὀξύθυμος , quick to wrath: a tribunal that delays not to punish. The fine expression that follows, a wakeful guardian of the land on behalf of them that sleep, has been misunderstood [by Schol. and others]: it is simply an imaginative description of an ever-vigilant tribunal, always watchful even when those it defends slumber.

706. φρούρημα , guardian: for this verbal suffix used actively compare γυναικὸς ὢν δούλευμα Ant. 756.

711. βαρεῖαν τήνδ' ὁμιλίαν χθονός , these dread visitants of the land. χθονός somewhat loosely but naturally after ὁμιλίαν. The Chorus' language is mild: but the threat is none the less effective.

714. ἀκαρπώτους . The notion is often found in the ancient poets that the will of destiny or the gods could be thwarted by man's perverseness: thus in Homer people act or suffer ὑπὲρ μόρον : and in Vergil the 'fates' of one side conflict with the 'fates' of the other.

719. μὴ τυχούσα , of course conditional: if I do not...

720. ὁμιλήσω , will haunt, will visit.

mvp-comment-221-1 τὸν ὅρκον] Cf. 650. The singular, ψῆφον not ψήφους, indicates that each judge had one vote, which was dropped in the urn of acquittal or condemnation ( τευχέων, v. 712; cf. Agam. 789 ). — εἴρηται λόγος, ‘that is all I have to say,' the pleading being now concluded.

mvp-comment-222-1 τοὺς ἐμούς τε κ.τ.λ.] ‘Which are not only mine, as the giver ( προφήτης, ν. 19), but my sire's, as the author of them.'

mvp-comment-223-1 οὐ λαχών] Apollo, as the pure god, the god of joy and justice, had no right to interfere in cases of murder; if he did so, he could not remain at Delphi and continue to give oracles untainted by human crime. The notion of continuance is conveyed by μένων, for which Hermann and others read νέμων.

κήρυσσε scil. σίγα ( Eur. Phoen. 1224

Dazu kommt, dafs πάγον . . τόνδε 688 und νεόπτολιν τήνδε 690 f. den Areopag als Schauplatz der Handlung voraussetzt in Widerspruch mit 80, 242, 443 u. a. S. 22.

κερδῶν ἄθικτον , incorruptible. The gen. belongs to a special (though common) class of usages with negative adjectives, e. g. ἄλυπος ἄτης Soph. Εl. 990,

ἀψόφητος κωκυμάτων
Αi. 321 , ἄσκευος ἀσπίδων Ε1. 36; a combination of gen. of reference and gen. of separation.

ὀξύθυμος , quick to wrath: a tribunal that delays not to punish. mvp-sidgwick-327-2-1 [During the following dialogue the seated judges in turn arise slowly and solemnly, and take their pebbles and drop them into the two urns (

τευχέων

βαρεῖαν τήνδ' ὁμιλίαν χθονός , these dread visitants of the land. χθονός somewhat loosely but naturally after ὁμιλίαν. The Chorus' language is mild: but the threat is none the less effective.

mvp-sidgwick-330-1-1 Thou hast respect to deeds of blood-not thine office, meaning that he protects the murderer, and so interferes with the functions of other deities, viz. themselves.

mvp-sidgwick-331-1-1 No longer from a pure oracle shalt thou prophesy. We must read νέμων for the awkward μένων of MSS. with H. D. Hart. Kirch. Weck., etc.; νέμων will then govern μαντεία. The word ἁγνά is much more applicable to μαντεῖα in the sense of shrine than in the sense of prediction.

mvp-sidgwick-332-1-1 For Ἰξίονος see note on l. 441

at such talk, Antig. 691 . It is obviously closely allied to dat. of time, of respect, and of cause.

μὴ τυχούσα , of course conditional: if I do not...

ὁμιλήσω , will haunt, will visit.
