Aeschylus Libation Bearers 152

Ulrich von Wilamowitz-Moellendorff (Translator)

Lafst rinnen die Zähren,
zerrinnen im Staub.
Staub ward der Herr,
ihm rinne die Zähre,
sein Grab ist uns Zuflucht
in Freud und Leid.
Wir weinen und beten, den Zauber
der Grabesspenden zu brechen.
Erhör' uns, Herr,
erhabner Fürst,
hindurch durch die Nacht,
die die Seele dir deckt,
erhör' uns.
Wehe! wehe! wehe!
Ach, kommt denn keiner
das Haus zu erlösen?
Fäll' er die Lanze,
160 spann' er zum Schusse
skythischen Bogen,
pack' er des Schwertes
Knauf im Gefechte
Brust an Brust.

Shed ye the pattering death-tear 1 for the dead sovereign, now that drink-offerings have been poured out upon this defence against both evil and good by way of averting 2 unprayed-for pollution. And do thou, O give ear, give ear, O master, from thy darkling spirit. Swell the warbling voice of woe,
Loudly let the meaſures flow;

And ever and anon the forrowing tear
Trickling dew the hallow'd ground,
T' avert the ills we fear;
Whilſt on this ſepulchral mound
Her pious hands the pure libation ſhed,

T'atone the mighty dead.
Hear me, O hear me, aweful lord,
Thro' the dreary gloom ador'd!
Ha! Who is this c ? See, ſiſters, ſee,
Mark with what force he ſhakes his angry lance:
195
Comes he this ruin’d house to free?
So does ſome Thracian chief advance;
So Mars, when rous’d with war’s alarms,
Radiant all his claſhing arms,
Rears high his flaming falchion to the blow,
200
And thunders on the foe.

Chorus
In terorr shrieked she, waking up from sleep,
And many torches, in the darkness quenched,
Gleamed through the palace in our mistress' aid;
Libations to the tomb forthwith she sends
Devising for her woe a sovereign cure.

Woe, woe, woe!
Let the teardrop fall, plashing on the ground
Where our lord lies low:
Fall and cleanse away the cursed libation's stain,
Shed on this grave-mound,
185
Fenced wherein together, gifts of good or bane
From the dead are found.
Lord of Argos, hearken!
Though around thee darken
Mist of death and hell, arise and hear!
190
Hearken and awaken to our cry of woe!
Who with might of spear
Shall our home deliver?
Who like Ares bend until it quiver,
Bend the northern bow?
195
Who with hand upon the hilt himself will thrust with glaive,
Thrust and slay and save?
