Woe's me! how 1 are we utterly ruined. O insuperable curse of this family, how dost thou level at many things that are well placed out of thy way, overcoming them with thy bow, that carries true to the mark even from afar. Thou strippest me thoroughly wretched of my friends. And now Orestes,—for he used to be lucky in his throws, removing his foot from out the slough of destruction,-but now—the hope which was to be medicinal against the goodly revelry in this house, he writes down as present 2 .

Ah me! Thus desolation on our head x
Is fall’n. O thou relentless curſe, whoſe rage
Hung o'er this house, has thy unsparing eye

Mark’d what we lodg’d at diſtance, aiming there
Thy cruel ſhafts, to rob me of my friends?
E'en now Oreſtes, who with cautious tread
Had from this gulf of ruin freed his foot,
E’en he, the hope medicinal to the madneſs

Of this ill house, ſhows that our hope betrays us.

Ah woe is me! thy word our ruin tells;
From roof-tree unto base are we despoiled.—
O thou whom nevermore we wrestle down,
775
Thou Fury of this home, how oft and oft
Thou dost descry what far aloof is laid,
Yea, from afar dost bend th' unerring bow
And rendest from my wretchedness its friends;
As now Orestes—who, a brief while since,
780
Safe from the mire of death stood warily,—
Was the home's hope to cure th' exulting wrong;
Now thou ordainest, Let the ill abide.
