Such an unkind kindness devising as an averter of ills, O Earth, mother! does the godless woman send me. The godless woman sends me to fulfil.
To speak the words prescribed I dread;
For ah! when blood hath once been shed,
Falling to earth, what ransom can be paid?
Woe for the sorrow-stricken hearth,
The home in ruin laid!
By mortals still abhorr'd a cloud,
To sunless darkness wed,
50 Doth through the master's fall the dwelling shroud.
ANTISTROPHE II.
The majesty invincible of old,
Matchless, supreme, who filled the ear
Of faithful lieges, and their heart controlled,
Standeth aloof;-Fear reigneth now,

Therefore to bear this gift of graceless worth—
O Earth, my nursing mother!—
55
The woman god-accurs'd doth send me forth
Lest one crime bring another.
Ill is the very word to speak, for none
Can ransom or atone
For blood once shed and darkening the plain.

O hearth of woe and bane,
O state that low doth lie!
Sunless, accursed of men, the shadows brood
Above the home of murdered majesty.

περαίνειν steht im Sinne von περᾶν, vgl. Pind. Pyth.
