Aeschylus Libation Bearers 423

Paul Mazon (Editor)

She struck a martial strain; then, after the manner of a Cissian heroine 5 , with a shower of blows wandering many ways might you see the outstretchings of her hand, dealt without intermission, from above, from afar; and with the stroke my buffeted, and all-wretched head resounds.

Train'd to the warrior’s arms. She struck him once;
Again ſhe ſtruck him; her uplifted hands
Redoubled blow on blow; ſwift on his head
The distant-sounding ſtroke m with ſteep force fell.

Wie Asiens Klageweiber,
Heulweiber von Susa,
so schlugen in Thränen

mein Haupt verzweiflungsvoll.

I dealt upon my breast the blow
That Asian mourning women know;

Wails from my breast the fun'ral cry,
The Cissian weeping melody;
Stretched rendingly forth, to tatter and tear,
My clenched hands wander, here and there,
From head to breast; distraught with blows

Throb dizzily my brows.

Unabgesekt in wildem Wechsel jagte sich,

Von meinem Streich getroffen, mein unselig Haupt.

2
Cho. El. Kor. Or. Cho, El. Kor. Or. Cho. El. Kor. Or. Cho. El.
