O Jupiter ! Jupiter! what am I to say ? whence shall I commence thus praying and importunating 1 ? How, speaking from good feeling, shall I obtain an equivalent boon ?
For now either the gore-stained attempts of the man-slaying axes are on the point of working the destruction of the family of Agamemnon throughout all time, or he, kindling fire and light for liberty, and the authorities that give laws to the state, shall enjoy the great weal of his fathers. Upon such a con flict as this is god-like Orestes, a solitary single-handed champion, on the point of entering against two. And may it be for victory!

What ſhou'd I ſay, eternal King,
Or how begin the strain?

These passions how contain,
That in my throbbing breast tumultuous ſpring?
O that, in aid, my daring deed
Might all the force of words exceed!
For now diſtained with blood the bick'ring sword,

The contest ends;
if all
This royal race ſhall fall;
Or the just laws their antient ſtate reſuming,
And liberty her light reluming,

Zeus, was sag' ich?
Wider beide,
die im letzten Gange siegreich waren,
trat allein mit Gottes Kraft Orestes
auf den Plan. O werde sein der Sieg.

Zeus, Zeus! what word to me is given?
What cry or prayer, invoking heaven,
Shall first by me be utterèd?
955
What speech of craft—nor all revealing,
Nor all too warily concealing—
Ending my speech, shall aid the deed?
For lo! in readiness is laid
The dark emprise, the rending blade;
960
Blood-dropping daggers shall achieve
The dateless doom of Atreus' name,
Or—kindling torch and joyful flame
In sign of new-won liberty—
Once more Orestes shall retrieve
965
His father's wealth, and, throned on high,
Shall hold the city's fealty.
So mighty is the grasp whereby,
Heaven-holpen, he shall trip and throw,
Unseconded, a double foe.
970
Ho for the victory! [ A loud cry within.

Was sag' ich, o Zeus, wo beginn' ich zuerst
Mein brünstiges Fleh'n, mein heißes Gebet?
Wie ström' ich den Strom
850
(Ab.)
In so mächtigem Kampf will kühn er allein
860
Orestes. Kröne der Sieg ihn!
