Daughter of Leda, guardian of my dwelling, thou hast spoken suitably to my absence ; for thou hast eked out thy greeting to a great length: but to praise becomingly, this honour must come from others. And for the rest, pamper me not after the fashions of women, nor as though I were a barbaric monarch, gape-out to me an outcry of earth-prostrate [homage] : nor make my path obnoxious to the evil eye by strewing it with vestments. With these indeed it is fitting to honour the gods : but for one that is a mortal to walk on embroidered purple, is for me by no means free from dread ; I bid thee reverence me as a man, not a god. Without carpetings and gay fineries my fame speaks clearly forth; and to be free from evil thoughts is God's best gift. But we should call him happy that has ended his life in beloved prosperity 2 . And if I shall fare 3 thus in all things, I shall be of good confidence.

Figlia di Leda, della casa mia
custode, acconce son le tue parole:

lunga l'assenza fu, lungo il tuo dire.
E l'elogio è tal dono, che dagli altri
solo venir ci può.
Ma, quanto al resto,
non mi trattare mollemente, a guisa

di donna, né levar voce prostrata
al suol, come di barbaro, né fare
che la mia via, cosparsa di tappeti,
segno d' invidia sia.

Daughter of Leda, watcher o'er my home,
1060
Thy greeting well befits mine absence long,
For late and hardly has it reached its end.
Know, that the praise which honour bids us crave,
Must come from others' lips, not from our own:
See too that not in fashion feminine
1065
Thou make a warrior's pathway delicate;
Not unto me, as to some Eastern lord,
Bowing thyself to earth, make homage loud.
Strew not this purple that shall make each step
An arrogance; such pomp beseems the gods,
1070
Not me. A mortal man to set his foot
On these rich dyes? I hold such pride in fear,
And bid thee honour me as man, not god.
Fear not—such footcloths and all gauds apart,
Loud from the trump of Fame my name is blown:
1075
Best gift of heaven it is, in glory's hour,
To think thereon with soberness: and thou—
Bethink thee of the adage, Call none blest
Till peaceful death have crowned a life of weal.
'Tis said 1 : I fain would fare unvexed by fear.

O Tochter Leda's, meines Hauses Hüterin,
885

Plut. 39, vgl. Wieseler Zeitschr. f. d. Altertumsw. 1848 S. 108 f.).
