Dost thou say these things sitting at the lower oar, while those upon the middle bench 1 of the vessel bear sway? Thou shalt know, old as thou art, how bitter it is for a man of thy years to be schooled, when discretion is prescribed him. But bondage and the pangs of starvation are the best physicians of the mind to school even old age. Having eyes seest thou not this? Kick not against the pricks, lest thou, stumbling, suffer.

spricht dich frei von dem Morde.
Nein, nein.
1620
1625
Wehe!
Weh mein König, welche Totenklage,
welchen Scheidegruß aus treuer Seele
1515 bring' ich dir? Mein König, wie du daliegst
in der Spinne Netz verstrickt, verhauchend
1630
deinen Odem in verruchtem Mord.
Wie liegst du so schmählich
gefällt durch Verrat.
Es schlug dich das Beil
mit doppelter Schneide.

This word from thee, this word from one who rows
Low at the oars 1 beneath, what time we rule,
We of the upper tier? Thou'lt know anon,
'Tis bitter to be taught again in age,
1905
By one so young, submission at the word.
But iron of the chain and hunger's throes,
Can minister unto an o'erswoln pride
Marvellous well, ay, even in the old.
Hast eyes, and seest not this? Peace—kick not thus

Against the pricks, unto thy proper pain!

NA In libris hi versus hoc ordine leguntur,
Emendavi hunc versuum ordinem et huc retraxi versum qui in libris post v. 1635. alienissima in sede positus est,
Versu 1625.
Vict. Codices
. Proximo versu libri
. Auratus
et
. Et
Scaliger quoque. Receperunt haec Porsonus aliique. Vossius cum eoque Stanleius legendum putabant
, Blomfieldius
, non recte: nam id
potius scribendum esset. Nunc, loco versus mutato, scripsi
Versu 1627. Libri
. Egregia Schützii emendatio,
, merito assensum tulit editorum, quamquam quae sententia esset horum verborum omnes iuxta Schützium non satis intellexisse video. Omnes enim, prorsus neglecto
At hoc illa dicit,
Absolvitur sententia eo versu quem huc revocatum addidi. Is in Flor. Farn. Vict. ita scriptus est,
Stanleius, quum Casaubonus
scribendum coniecisset, hunc versum ita explebat,
