and the elder monarch spake thus aloud: “Hard is the fate not to obey; hard too if I am to sacrifice my daughter, the ornament of my house, polluting a father's hands with the gushings of a virgin's blood near the altar. Which of these alternatives is without its horrors? How can I be a deserter of the fleet, failing the confederacy? for it is meet that they 1 with wrath full wrathfully should desire the sacrifice that shall lull the winds, and the blood of the maiden,—for it would be well.”

Chorus
Mighty the demon, dire his hate,
Whom here thou boastest to preside ;
Woe ! woe ! ill-omened praise of Fate,
Baneful and still unsatisfied !
Alas! 'Tis Zeus, in will, in deed,
Sole cause, sole fashioner; for say
What comes to mortals undecreed
By Zeus, what here, that owneth not his sway ?

And then the elder monarch spake aloud—
Ill lot were mine, to disobey!
250
And ill, to smite my child, my household 's love and pride!
To stain with virgin blood a father's hands, and slay
My daughter, by the altar's side!
'Twixt woe and woe I dwell—
I dare not like a recreant fly,
255
And leave the league of ships, and fail each true ally;
For rightfully they crave, with eager fiery mind,
The virgin's blood, shed forth to lull the adverse wind—
God send the deed be well!
