Aeschylus Seven Against Thebes 486

Theodore Alois Buckley (Translator)

Another, the fourth, who occupies the adjoining gates of Onca Minerva, stands hard by with a shout, the shape and mighty mould of Hippomedon; and I shuddered at him as he whirled the immense orb, I mean the circumference of his buckler—I will not deny it. And assuredly it was not any mean artificer in heraldry who produced this work upon his buckler, a Typhon, darting forth through his fire-breathing mouth dark smoke, the quivering sister of fire, and the circular cavity of the hollow-bellied shield hath been made further solid with coils of serpents. He himself, too, hath raised the war-cry; and possessed by Mars, raves for the onslaught, like a Thyiad , glaring terror. Well must we guard against the attack of such a man as this, for Terror is already vaunting himself hard by our gates.

At the next gate, nam'd from the martial Goddess

Onca Minerva, ſtands Hippomedon e .
I heard his thund'ring voice, I ſaw his form
In bulk and ſtature proudly eminent;
I ſaw him roll his shield, large, maſſy, round,
Of broad circumference:
545
it ſtruck my ſoul
With terror. On its orb no vulgar artiſt
Expreſs'd this image, A Typhæus huge,
Diſgorging from his ſoul enfoulder'd jaws,
In fierce effuſion, wreaths of duſky ſmoke,
550
Signal of kindling flames: its bending verge
With folds of twiſted ſerpents border'd round.
With ſhouts the giantchief provokes the war;
And in the ravings of outrageous valour
Glares terror from his eyes. Behoves thee then
555
Strong oppoſition to his firey rage,
Which at the gates e'en now ſpreads wild diſmay.

Con urli il quarto alle vicine porte
d'Atene Òncade sta: d'Ippomedonte
l'immane mole e la figura. Un brivido,
540
non lo posso negar, m'invase, quando
il cerchio dello scudo, aia gigante,
lo vidi rotear. Né vile artefice
fu chi l'insegna dello scudo pinse.
Tifone dalla bocca, alito fiammeo,
545
scaglia negra fuliggine, sorella
volubile del fuoco; e intorno intorno,
della concava spera orlato è il cuoio
con viluppi di serpi.
Alto ei levava
550
l'urlo di guerra: si lanciava, pieno
di Marte, come furïosa Tïade,
alla pugna: terror gli occhi spiravano.
Ben dalle prove di quest'uomo guàrdati:
ché terrore alle porte alto già grida.

Lo, next him stands a fourth and shouts amain,
By Pallas Onca's portal, and displays
A different challenge; 'tis Hippomedon!
Huge the device that starts up from his targe
In high relief; and, I deny it not,
460
I shuddered, seeing how, upon the rim,
It made a mighty circle round the shield—
No sorry craftsman he, who wrought that work
And clamped it all around the buckler's edge!
The form was Typhon: from his glowing throat
465
Rolled lurid smoke, spark-litten, kin of fire!
The flattened edge-work, circling round the whole,
Made strong support for coiling snakes that grew
Erect above the concave of the shield:
Loud rang the warrior's voice; inspired for war,
470
He raves to slay, as doth a Bacchanal,
His very glance a terror! of such wight
Beware the onset! closing on the gates,
He peals his vaunting and appalling cry!

Ein vierter Heerfürst, der am Nachbarthor gebeut
465
Den schwarzen Qualm, des Feuers flücht'gen Bruder, sprüht;
Mit vielgewundnen Schlangen ist der runde Saum
Des hochgewölbten Schildes ringsumher bedeckt.
475
Er hebt den Schlachtruf, und von Ares trunken stürzt
Er sich zum Kampfe, gleich Thyaden, Tod im Blick.
Wo solche Männer kämpfen, ziemt's vorsichtig sein;
