We are come to a plain, the distant boundary of the earth, to the Scythian track, to an untrodden desert. Vulcan, it behoves thee that the mandates, which thy Sire imposed, be thy concern,—to bind this daring wretch to the lofty-cragged rocks, in fetters of adamantine chains that cannot be broken. For he stole and gave to mortals thy honour, the brilliancy of fire [that aids] all arts . Hence for such a trespass he must needs give retribution to the gods; that he may be taught to submit to the sovereignty of Jupiter, and to cease from his philanthropic disposition.

AT length then to the wide earth's extreme bounds,
1
To Scythia are we come, thoſe pathleſs wilds
Where human footſtep never mark'd the ground.
Now, Vulcan, to thy taſk; at Jove's command
Fix to theſe highprojecting rocks this vain
5
Artificer of man; each maſſy link
Draw cloſe, and bind his adamantine chains.
Thy radiant pride, the firey flame, that lends
Its aid to ev'ry art, he ſtole, and bore
The gift to mortals; for which bold offence
10
The gods aſſign him this juſt puniſhment;
That he may learn to reverence the pow'r
Of Jove, and moderate his love to man.

a te commise: a queste rupi eccelse
entro catene adamantine stringere

Well! why delay and bootless pity vent?
This god, to gods most hateful, why not hate,
Who thy prerogative to men betrayed?

Lo, the earth's bound and limitary land,
1
The Scythian steppe, the waste untrod of men!
Look to it now, Hephaestus—thine it is,
Thy Sire obeying, this arch-thief to clench
Against the steep-down precipice of rock,
5
With stubborn links of adamantine chain.
Look thou: thy flower, the gleaming plastic fire,
He stole and lent to mortal man—a sin
That gods immortal make him rue to-day,
Lessoned hereby to own th' omnipotence
10
Of Zeus, and to repent his love to man!

5
In diamant'ner Fesseln unlösbarem Nez.
Denn deine Blum', allkünstlerischen Feuers Glanz,
Hat er geraubt, der Erde Söhnen zugewandt;
10
Des Zeus, und seiner Menschenlieb' Einhalt gebeut.
