Upon those who are nothing loath hast thou urged this, Prometheus: and now having with light step quitted my rapidly-wafted chariot-seat, and the pure aether, highway of the feathered race, I will draw near to this rugged ground: and I long to hear the whole tale of thy sufferings.
Enter OCEAN.
I am arrived at the end of a long journey , having passed over [it] to thee, Prometheus, guiding this winged steed of mine, swift of pinion, by my will, without a bit; and, rest assured, I sorrow with thy misfortunes. For both the tie of kindred thus constrains me, and, relationship apart, there is no one on whom I would bestow a larger share [of my regard] than to thyself. And thou shalt know that these words are sincere, and that it is not in me vainly to do lip-service: for come, signify to me in what it is necessary for me to assist thee; for at no time shalt thou say that thou hast a stauncher friend than Oceanus.

Alight I on this rude and craggy rock,
Anxious to hear all thy unhappy tale.

per qual ragione egli cosí m' offenda.
Seduto appena sul paterno soglio,
subito Giove a compartir si diede
doni ai Celesti, a compartirne uffici,
a chi questo, a chi quello.

E dei mortali
non fe parola alcuna: anzi distruggere
tutta quanta volea la stirpe loro,

E niuno,

se togli me, si oppose al suo disegno.
lo n'ebbi ardire. E gli uomini salvai
dal piombare nell'Ade, allo sterminio.
Per questo in tali pene io son fiaccato,
dure a soffrire, misere a vedere.

Perché pietà degli uomini sentii,
indegno io stesso parvi di pietà;
e in questi lacci dolorosi stretto,
offro tal vista miseranda a Giove.

To willing hearts, and schooled to feel,
Prometheus, came thy tongue's appeal;
Therefore we leave, with lightsome tread,
The flying cars in which we sped—
We leave the stainless virgin air

Where wingèd creatures float and fare,
And by thy side, on rocky land,
Thus gently we alight and stand,
Willing, from end to end, to know
Thine history of woe.

[ The Chorus alight from their winged cars. Enter Oceanus, mounted on a griffin.

193-396. First Episode. 193- 283. First Scene: Prometheus and the Coryphaeus. The scholiast says: τὴν ὑπόθεσιν (that is, the expo- sition of the events supposed to pre- cede the opening of the play) βουλό- μενος διδάξαι, τὸ περίεργον (curiosity) τοῦ γυναικώδους ήθους προσέλαβεν (availed himself of, as a motive). οὐκ ἂν γὰρ ὁ ᾿Ὠκεανds (who enters later) ἠξίωσεν ἐρωτῆσαι εἰδώς. The curiosity of the chorus is a natural conse- quence of their awakened sympathy. Still it is to be observed that Prome- theus on his part is moved to tell his story by the longing to unburden his heart to sympathizing friends (see 198). He needs only the request in order to comply at once. - The Pro- logue and this first scene of the first episode constitute the first act of the drama, which expounds the situation and prepares the way for the follow- ing dramatic development.
