I bid you go to the ship turned toward [the shore] with all speed: nor let any one delay: for dragging by no means shall spare your tresses.
Oh! oh! Father, the protection of your image, now leads me to calamity, to the sea like a spider, black spectre. Alas! mother Earth, mother Earth, repel the dreadful cries. O Jove son of Earth advance.
By no means do I dread the deities here; for they have not nourished me, nor brought me to old age by their rearing.
The two-footed serpent rages near me, and like a viper,† gnawing my foot. Mother Earth, mother Earth, repel the dreadful cries. O Jove son of Earth advance.
Unless some one goes to the ship, submitting to these things, a tearing shall not pity the work of her garment.

Hence, I command you, to the rolling veſſel
960
Inſtantly hence: if one preſumes to linger,
I pay no reverence to your criſped locks,
This hand perforce ſhall drag her by her treſſes.
Ah me, immortal Sire! Inſolent Force
Will hurry me away: it drags me now
965
Intangled in its nets; and all my hopes
Are vaniſh'd like a dream, a duſky dream.
Earth, I adjure thee, ſhield me; ſhield me, Jove,
God of this land, ſave me in this hard conflict.
Gods of this land! They awe not me; my youth
970
They nouriſh'd not, nor to old age upheld me.
Near me the ſerpent rolls his train, and ſoon
Will, like a pois'nous viper, dart upon me.
Earth, I adjure thee ſhield me; ſhield me, Jove,
God of this land; ſave me in this hard conflict.
975
If one of you perverſely lingers here,
Your richly purfled ſtoles ſhall find no mercy.

Padre, ahi!, per me le sante immagini

Ahimè, ahimè, ahimè!
Tu madre Terra, tu madre Terra,

questo allontana fiero periglio.
Di questa terra i Dèmoni non temo.

Non mi nutrivano essi e non mi crebbero.
A me vicino un angue bipede
con furibondo impeto viene:
al piede m'ha morso una vipera,
ed immobile a sé mi tiene.

Ahimè, ahimè, ahimè!

Swift to the vessel of the double prow,
Go quickly! let none linger, else this hand
Ruthless will hale you by your tresses hence.
Alack, O father! from the shrine
Not aid but agony is mine.
925
As a spider he creeps and he clutches his prey,
And he hales me away.
A spectre of darkness, of darkness. Alas and alas! well-a-day!
O Earth, O my mother! O Zeus, thou king of the earth, and her child!
Turn back, we pray thee, from us his clamour and threatenings wild!
930
Peace! I fear not this country's deities.
They fostered not my childhood nor mine age.
Like a snake that is human he comes, he shudders and crawls to my side:
As an adder that biteth the foot, his clutch on my flesh doth abide.
O Earth, O my mother! O Zeus, thou king of the earth, and her child!
935
Turn back, we pray thee, from us his clamour and threatenings wild!
Swift each unto the ship; repine no more,
Or my hand shall not spare to rend your robe.

Zweite Gegenstrophe.
In meiner Nähe zischt zweifüßig hier
Die Schlang' heran und wird
845
Zur gift'gen Natter, bohrt
In's Herz tief sich ein.
O Ge, Ge, Mutter hilf,
Wende das Graun von uns!
O Zeus, Ge's Sohn, hilf!
850

Ak. d. W. 1888 II S. 347 f.
