The Suppliant Women. (OCR draft) Experimental (The Suppliant Women.. Theodore Alois Buckley, 1849.) — 524 focus
King of kings, most blest of the blest, and most perfect might of the perfect, blessed Jove, be persuaded, and may it come to pass 3 —avert from thy race the insolence of men, justly hating it, and plunge into the purple deep the black-benched pest 4 .
Regarding the woman's side, renew the pleasing story of the beloved woman our ancestress; be mindful O you who embraced Io, 1 by whom we boast ourselves to be your race, settlers from this land.
But I have returned into the ancient track, and the flowery scenes of the watchings of our mother, the herd-feeding mead, from whence Io driven 2 by the brize, flies distracted, passing through many tribes of mortals: and twice by fate having cut through the billowy way she reaches the opposite continent.
LES SUPPLIANTES (OCR draft) Experimental (LES SUPPLIANTES. Paul Mazon, 1920-1925.) — 524 focus

Might of the mighty, king of kings,

Supremely bleſt amidſt the bleſt above,
Enthron'd in glory, righteous Jove,
From whom perfection to the perfect ſprings,
Hear us, O hear our fond request,
To pity melt each gen'rous breast;
610
View this bold outrage with indignant eye,
And shield us from the injury:
O'ertake their proud bark on the purple main,
Sink it with all its ſable train;
Our female band with pity view,
615
And think from whoſe rich blood our honour'd
race we drew.
If Argive lö's blooming grace
Cou'd e'er thy fond enamour'd boſom move
To warm deſire, and rapt'rous love,
620
The pleaſing memory of her charms retrace.
From her our race divine we boaſt,
Not foreign to this Argive coaft.
Her foot, in times of old, where now we tread,
Trod the flow'renamell'd mead;
625
And made with lowings loud the forests ring,
As from the bryze's tort'ring ſting
O'er many' a realm ſhe wander'd wide,
And dar'd the bounding waves, that world from
world divide y .

Gli occhi volgi alla supplice

portavi un giorno, anche una volta mostra,
memore ivi di quando
lo disfiorasti. D'esser tua progenie
ci glorïam, dal nostro suolo in bando.

E impressi i pie', dell'avola
su l'orme antiche, per vedette floride
e sovra erbosi pascoli,
donde lo, punta dall'estro,

scende, com'è destino.

O King of Kings, among the blest
Thou highest and thou happiest,
Listen and grant our prayer,
And, deeply loathing, thrust
Away from us the young men's lust,
580
And deeply drown
In azure waters, down and ever down,
Benches and rowers dark,
The fatal and perfidious bark!
Unto the maidens turn thy gracious care;
585
Think yet again upon the tale of fame,
How from the maiden loved of thee there sprung
Mine ancient line, long since in many a legend sung!
Remember, O remember, thou whose hand
Did Io by a touch to human shape reclaim.
590
For from this Argos erst our mother came
Driven hence to Egypt's land,
Yet sprung of Zeus we were, and hence our birth we claim.
And now have I roamed back
Unto the ancient track
595
Where Io roamed and pastured among flowers,
Watched o'er by Argus' eyes,
Through the lush grasses and the meadow bowers.
Thence, by the gadfly maddened, forth she flies
Unto far lands and alien peoples driven
600
And, following fate, through paths of foam and surge,
Sees, as she goes, the cleaving strait divide
Greece, from the Eastland riven.

Aller Gewalt Gewaltigster, ewiger Zeus, erhör' uns!

Der Männer Frechheit in gerechtem Zorne!

Erste Gegenstrophe.
Heimisch in Argos' Lande.

Zweite Strophe.
Flüchtete, rasend im Geist;
520
