Jove allied to both, inclining to one side, regards these things, distributing as is right unjust things to the bad, but the rewards of piety to the just 3 . Wherefore, these being equally inclined, are you pained to do what is just?
There is need of deep thought, so that the clear-sighted eye may 4 , without dizziness, reach the bottom of deep preserving thought, like a diver: that these things harmless, first indeed to the city and to ourselves, may turn out well, and that neither strife lay hold of the pledges 1 , nor that we, having given up you placed here in the seats of the gods, bring on ourselves a dire fellow-dweller the all-destroying avenging god, who, not even in the abode of Hades frees the dead. Does there not seem to be need of saving thought?
Consider, and be most justly a pious receiver of strangers, betray not the exile driven from afar by godless expulsion:

un jour, si pareil malheur arrivait : « Pour honorer des étrangers, tu as perdu ta cité! »

Each equally allied, impartial Jove
Weighs each in equal balance; but repays
470
The impious deed with vengeance, to the juſt
Rewards their ſanctity. Why griev'ſt thou then
To emulate the God, and act with juſtice?
Matter of high import hast thou propos'd,
Which not admits heady and fitful raſhneſs,
475
But deep deliberation, provident care,
Wiſely attentive to the general weal,
That hence no evil riſe, but the event
Be profp'rous found, firſt, to the ſtate and me;
Next, that no force arreſt you here, nor we
480
Betray you refug'd in theſe hallow'd ſeats,
The hostages of Heav'n, and on our heads
Call ruin and the vengeance of the Gods,
That e'en in death acquits not. Seems not this
Matter of deep debate, and public care?
485
Deliberate then with prudent care:
To thy counſels take with thee
Heav'ncommercing piety,
And be ſtedfaſt juſtice near.
Hark! methinks I hear them ſay,
490
Do not, mighty king, betray
Wretched exiles wand'ring far.

435
D'un meditar profondo e salutare
entro ai gorghi or convien che a guisa cali
di palombaro la pupilla vigile,
non torbida d'ebbrezza, affinché prima
tutti, per la città, per noi medesimi,

lieto esito abbian questi eventi, in modo
che né alcuno ci provochi a contesa
per rïaver le cose estorte, né
tradir dobbiamo voi, prostrate supplici
agli altari dei Numi, ed attirare
445
il Dio della rovina ultima, Alàstore,
ospite duro, che neppur nell'Ade
lascia liberi i morti. O non vi sembra
che la salvezza meditar convenga?
Medita, e in tutto mostrati
450
pio protettor degli ospiti,
come Giustizia chiede.
No, non tradir la profuga,
che dall'avversa furia
d'empî sospinta, qui supplice siede.

Zeus, lord of kinship, rules at will
440
The swaying balance, and surveys
Evil and good; to men of ill
Gives evil, and to good men praise.
And thou—since true those scales do sway—
Shalt thou from justice shrink away?
445
A deep, a saving counsel here there needs—
An eye that like a diver to the depth
Of dark perplexity can pass and see,
Undizzied, unconfused. First must we care
That to the State and to ourselves this thing
450
Shall bring no ruin; next, that wrangling hands
Shall grasp you not as prey, nor we ourselves
Betray you thus embracing sacred shrines,
Nor make the avenging all-destroying god,
Who not in hell itself sets dead men free,
455
A grievous inmate, an abiding bane.
—Spake I not right, of saving counsel's need?
Yea, counsel take and stand to aid
At Justice' side and mine.
Betray not me, the timorous maid
460
Whom far beyond the brine
A godless violence cast forth forlorn.

385
400
Allgerecht frommgesinnt, unser Schuh!
Nicht dahin gib die Schaar,
Die Gewalt ruchlos aus-
trieb in dies ferne Land!

praebent.
