1. Allusion non seulement à la descendance d'Épaphos, mais aussi à son rôle de fondateur de villes. « Innombrables sont les cités fondées en Égypte par la main d'Épaphos » (Pindare, Ném. X 5). Ce sont ses facultés créatrices qui révèlent en lui le fils de Zeus.

erstes Stasimon: Gebet zu Gott (Zeus). Schütze uns gegen den Übermut der Männer; als Nachkommen der Io rufen wir zu dir als unserem Stammvater. Wir stehen jetzt wieder auf der Flur, von welcher Io fortgetrieben wurde hinauf zum Bosporus, über diesen nach Klein- asien, durch Phrygien, Mysien, Lydien, Pamphylien, Kilikien, Phönikien nach Ägypten, wo sie erschien zum Staunen der Be- wohner, welche sich über das niegesehene Wesen, halb Kuh, halb Frau, entsetzten. Dort in Ägypten aber legtest du deine heilende Hand auf sie und sie erhielt wieder ihre Gestalt und gebar von dir den Epaphos, den Ahnherrn unseres Geschlechts. Wir haben also ein Anrecht auf deine Hilfe, und du kannst helfen; denn wer ist mäch- tiger als Zeus, dessen Wort sofort zur Tat wird!"
