τέλος (so Weil für γάμος) Κυθερείας, d. i. γαμήλιον τέλος, die Weihe der Liebesgöttin, die Hoch- zeit. Vgl. τέλος θαλεροῖο γάμοιο Hom. v 74. Κυθερεία heißt Aphro- dite schon Hom. 9 288, Hes. Theog. 198 ( ὅτι προσέκυρσε Κυθήροις). Die Insel Kythera, eine alte Kolonie der Phönizier, war wie Zypern ( Κύπρις) ein Mittelpunkt des orien- talischen Aphroditekultus (Astarte).

στυγερών (für στύγειον Hermann, vielleicht ist στυγίων vorzuziehen) ἆθλον, meinen Feinden wünsche ich solche Not. Vgl. zu 381. Mit ἆθλον vgl. Soph. Phil. 508 δυσοίστων πόνων ἆθλα. Die Änderung στύγιον (oder στυγερόν πέλει τόδ' ἄθλον gibt einen matten Gedanken.

In dem zweiten Strophen- paar fordern die Dienerinnen, ihren Herrinnen widersprechend, daß man der Aphrodite als einer mäch- tigen und segensreichen Göttin die ihr gebührende Ehre schenke, und in dem Gefühl, daß die Danaiden (wie (wie Hippolytos bei Euripides) die Artemis auf Kosten der Aphrodite feiern, geben sie trüben Ahnungen Ausdruck. Da- mit deutet der Dichter die Nieder- lage der Argiver (1054f.) und den Vollzug der Ehe (1060 ff.) an. θεσμὸς ὅδε, Schol. ὁ τοῦ ὑμετέρου (vielmehr ἡμετέρου) ὕμνου νόμος: ,, Gegen Kypris ist nicht unehr- erbietig unsere verständige Weise; diese Göttin ist mächtig, stiftet Segen, spendet Wonne, wenn sie nur das rechte Maß einhält."

Der Gedanke aber auch die Wonne, welche die Göttin ge- währt, ist eine schöne Gabe, wenn sie mit Maß genossen wird" wird in seine Teile zerlegt. · μετάνοινοι: Schol. κοινωνοί. φίλα ματρί: wie Eros Sohn der Aphrodite ist, so können auch Pothos und Himeros, welche dem Eros zur Seite stehen, und Peitho als deren Kinder ange- sehen werden. Diese vier bilden mit den Chariten das Geleite der Göttin. Vgl. Hom. Ξ 214 ἦ (nämlich Αφροδίτη), καὶ ἀπὸ στήθεσφιν ἐλύ- σατο κεστὸν ἱμάντα ποικίλον, ἔνθα τέ οἱ θελκτήρια πάντα τέτυκτο· ἔνθε ἔνι μὲν φιλότης, ἐν δ᾽ ἵμερος, ἐν δ᾽ ὀαριστὺς πάρφασις, ἤ τ' ἔκλεψε νόον πύκα περ φρονεόντων. a (fehlt in der Handschrift, von Wellauer eingesetzt) τ' οὐδὲν ἄπαρνον τελέθει (der nichts versagt wird) θέλκτορι Πειθοῖ für θέλκτωρ τε Πειθώ, οὐδὲν κτέ. Mit θέλκτωρ vgl. πράκτορες αἵματος Eum. 320 von den Erinyen, τύχη σωτήρ Ag. 669, γέννας πενθητῆρος Pers. 949. δέδοται ψεδυρᾶς τρίβου (in der Handschrift ψεδυρα τρίβοι) τ᾽ ἐρώ- των: Schol. ἡ Αρμονία μετέχει τῆς Αφροδίτης, „, der Harmonia ist An- teil gegeben an Aphrodite und an dem flüsternden Kosen der Liebes- götter". Da Harmonia die Personi- fikation der Ordnung und des Eben- maßes ist, so wird damit gefordert, daß mit dem Genuß der Liebe Maß und Ordnung verbunden sei. Vgl. Eur. Med. 627 ἔρωτες ὑπὲρ μὲν ἄγαν ἐλθόντες οὐκ εὐδοξίαν οὐδ᾽ ἀρετὰν παρέδωκαν ἀνδράσιν· εἰ δ᾽ ἅλις (d. i. μετρίως) ἔλθοι Κύπρις, οὐκ ἄλλα θεὸς εὔχαρις οὕτως, Iph. Α. 554 εἴη δέ μοι μετρία μὲν χάρις, πόθοι δ' ὅσιοι καὶ μετέχοιμι τᾶς Αφροδίτας, πολλὰν δ᾽ ἀπονείμαν. Nach Hes. Theog. 937 ist Harmonia, die Gattin des Kadmos, Tochter der Aphro- dite. Vgl. Hom. Hymn. II 16 αὐτὰρ ευπλόκαμοι Χάριτες καὶ εύφρονες Ωραι Αρμονίη θ' Ήβη τε Διός θυγάτηρ τ' Αφροδίτη ὀρχεῦντ᾽ ἀλλή- λων ἐπὶ καρπῷ χεῖρας ἔχουσαι. Ζυ ψευρᾶς vgl. Hesych. ψέδυρος· ψίθυρος (deshalb steht in der Hand- schrift über δ von ψεδυρα ein 1).
