CLOTHO

Bring in the wounded next, Hermes. (To the DEAD) First tell me what deaths brought you here—but no, I myself will refer to my papers and pass you. Eighty-four should have died in battle yesterday in Media, among them Gobares, the son of Oxyartas.

HERMES

Here they are!

CLOTHO

Seven committed suicide for love, among them the philosopher Theagenes for the courtesan from Megara.¹

HERMES

Right here beside you.

CLOTHO

Where are the men who killed each other fighting for the throne?

HERMES

Here they stand.

CLOTHO

And the man who was murdered by his wife and her lover?

HERMES

There beside you.

CLOTHO

Now bring in the output of the courts, I mean those who died by the scourge and the cross. And where are the sixteen who were killed by pirates, Hermes?

HERMES

Here they are, these wounded men whom you see. Do you want me to bring in all the women together?

CLOTHO

By all means, and also those lost at sea, for they died in the same way. And those who died of the fever, bring them in together, too, and their doctor Agathocles along with them.

Clotho

Bring up the wounded next, Hermes. Now I can get to work. Tell me how you were killed. Or no; I had better look at my notes, and call you over. Eighty-four due to be killed in battle yesterday, in Mysia, ‘These to include Gobares, son of Oxyartes.

Hermes

Adsunt.

Clotho

The seven who killed themselves for love. Also Theagenes, the philosopher, for love of the Megarian courtesan.

Hermes

Here they are, look.

Clotho

And the rival claimants to thrones, who slew one another?

Hermes

Here!

Clotho

And the one murdered by his wife and her paramour?

Hermes

Straight in front of you,

Clotho

Now the victims of the law,—the cudgelled and the crucified. And where are those sixteen who were killed by robbers?

Hermes

Here; you may know them by their wounds. Am I to bring the women too?

Clotho

Yes, certainly; and all who were shipwrecked; it is the same kind of death. And those who died of fever, bring them too, the doctor Agathocles and all.

Bring on the wounded next to these,

Hermes

I will begin with you. Tell me by what death you have come here; or, rather, I will examine you by reference to the documents. Eightyfour must have died in battle yesterday in Mysia, among them Gobares, the son of Oxyartes.

Hermes

They are here.

Klotho

Seven cut their own throats for love, and Theagenes the philosopher on account of the courtesan from Megara.

Now bring those from the law-courts; I mean the impaled and the flogged to death. And where are the sixteen who were killed by robbers?

Hermes

You see this lot are here, the wounded. Shall I bring on the women en masse?

Klotho

By all means; and the shipwrecked en masse, for they died in the same way. And as for the fever patients, bring them all at once, too, and Agathokles the doctor with them.

Notes on the current edition

The Downward Journey, or the Tyrant

1. This man can hardly be other than the Cynic of Patras mentioned in The Passing of Peregrinus, who died in the teign of Marcus Aurelius. To be sure, Galen says he was killed by his doctor (x, p. 909), but he may well have been alive when Lucian wrote this.
