EL
O day beyond all days that yet have rolled
Most hateful in thy course of light!
O horror of that night!
O hideous feast, abhorr’d, not to be told!
How could I bear it, when my father’s eye
Saw death advancing from the ruthless pair,
Conjoint in cruel villany,
90
By whom my life was plunged in black despair?
90
Oh, to the workers of such deeds as these
May great Olympus’ Lord
Return of evil still afford,
Nor let them wear the gloss of sovran ease!

Drum will ich offenbaren, was ich ausgedacht;
Doch du vergönne meinem Wort ein scharfes Ohr,
30
Gebot mir Phöbos also, wie du gleich vernimmst:
35
Also sei der Rede Sinn.

Chorus

Pardon me, daughter ; if my warmth oileud,
Glad I submit. We'll follow, and obey thee.

Electra
But of my life how much to me is lost
Already? And, by hope not cheer'd, my ills
No longer can I bear, but waste away;
My parents lost, and by no worthy friend
185
Protected, like a foreign slave I serve,
185
Disgraceful task! within my father's house,
My table scanty, and my vestments mean.

σαφῆ] 'Since we have already the sunshine in full brilliance awakening there unmistakably into song the early voice of birds.' λαμπρόν and σαφή both form part of the predication. σαφή, i. e. not a doubtful twitter here and there, but the unanimous warbling which tells that the morning is really come: - Milton's 'charm of earliest birds,' not Tennyson's 'earliest pipe of half-awakened birds.'
