EL CENTINELA
Lo ignoro. Allí no se encontraba golpe alguno de golpe de hacha ni de haber sido removida la tierra por el azadón: el suelo aquél firme y escabroso... intacto, sin huellas de rueda, sin vestigio alguno por donde se pueda descubrir al culpable. Tan luego como el primer centinela de día nos comunicó la noticia, nos pareció á todos un prodigio funesto. El difunto se nos presentó no realmente sepultado, sino cubierto el cuerpo de menudísima tierra, como para evitar el crimen de impiedad, 1 no viéndose rastro alguno de fieras ó de perros que hubieran venido á destrozarle. Inmediatamente comenzaron á lanzarse unos á otros palabras de amenaza, acusando cada cual de los centinelas al otro. Ya estábamos para venir á las manos, sin que hubiera allí nadie que pudiera evitarlo; pero como cada cual parecía para los demás culpable y ninguno lo era manifiestamente, á todos nos salvó esta incertidumbre. Dispuestos estábamos á poner las manos en candente hierro, á pasar por entre las llamas, 2 á prestar juramento por los dioses, de nuestra inocencia y de no tener conocimiento de los perpetradores del crimen, ni de los que lo habían proyectado, cuando en vista de no poderse averiguar nada por los que indagaban, tomó uno la palabra, el cual nos obligó á todos á inclinar de espanto la cabeza hacia la tierra, porque ni teníamos nada que decirle ni sabíamos cómo seguir sin peligro su consejo. Su parecer era que se te debía dar inmediata fiel relación del hecho; ya que no era posible de ningún modo ocultártelo. Prevaleció esta opinión y á mi ¡desgraciado! me tocó en suerte el tener que aceptar este beneficio. Aquí me encuentro, pues, contra toda mi voluntad, y seguramente contra la tuya, porque nadie recibe de buen grado los mensajeros de malas nuevas.
