Gesprengt, vom Tranke nippte, schittelt sich sofort
Am Flugelleibe, ſchwirrt umher wie toll, und achzt
Und stöhnt in dumpfen Lauten; voll Entsezen sieht
Der Eingeladnen ganze Schaar des Vogels Qual.

Er zappelt fort, senkt schlaff die Purpurfuße dann,
Und stirbt. Der gottgeschenkte Sohn streckt über Tisch
Den bloßen Arm aus seinem Oberkleide vor,
Lautrufend: „Wer auf Erden wollte meinen Tod?
Sprich, Alter: du ja thatest so geschäftig hier,

Und deine Hand hat diesen Becher mir gereicht!"
Schnell faßt er seinen greisen Arm und forscht ihn aus,
Ihn darzustellen als ertappt auf solcher That.
Und überführt, bekennt er nothgedrungen kaum
Kreusens Unthat und des Tranks Geheimnisse.

Da stürmt der Jungling, den Apollons Spruch enthullt,
Mit seinen Tischgenossen unverweilt hinaus,
Und tritt vor Pytho's Häupter hin, und spricht das Wort:
„O Erde, heil'ge, sterben sollten wir durch Gift, 2
Das uns Erechtheus' Tochter bot, ein fremdes Weib!"

Die Fürsten Delphi's sezten dann einhellig fest,
Daß meine Herrin sterben soll vom Fels gestürzt,
Weil sie den Heil'gen todten, Mord in Phobos' Haus
Verüben wollte. Nach der Unheilvollen, die
Den Todespfad hereilte, spåht die ganze Stadt.

Sie, die zu Phobos' Hause kam, nach einem Sohn
