Ἱστορίαι (Greek) (Thucydides. Historiae, Vol 1-2. Jones, Henry Stuart, editor. Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1910. (1942 printing).)
ταῦτα . . δουλωθεῖεν —for the position of the first καί see c. 67, 6. It is usual to supply from ταῦτα (i.e. what they had done) a οὕτως to ἥκιστ’ ἃν δ.: better, I think, without; ‘that it was not likely that they would be made slaves by the A.’
δέχεσθαι —the meaning of εἶπον passes into that of κελεύω.
ἀλλ’ ἤ — VII. 50, 3.
μιᾷ νηί —cf. II. 7.
ἡσυχάζοντας applies to the Corcyreans.
ὡς —‘as.’ They were to put matters in a good light.
ἀνεπιτήδειον —to Corcyra.
ἐπιστροφή —lest ‘notice’ should be taken by Athens, resulting in some action against Corcyra. The πρέσβεις must have completely won over part of the refugee friends of Peithias to their side, since it was thought necessary to intern them in Aegina (B. Schmidt).
