Commentary

Commentary on Thucydides: Book 3 (Thucydides, Book III. Marchant, Edgar C., editor. London: Macmillan and Company, 1909.) focus

τοῦτο —internal aecus., ‘in this.’

ἀποστήσασι —sc. τὴν πόλιν.

τῆς ἀντικαθισταμένης —‘which is ranging itself against us.’

ἐς πόλεμον ἐπέρχεσθε —either ἔρχεσθε ἐς πόλεμον or ἐπέρχεσθε alone would be usual. Here we must supply αὐτῇ, and take ἐς of the end in view.

εἰ with fut. indic., ‘if you are going to.’

ἀδικήσετε . . κτείνοντες —‘you will be guilty of the crime of’; a legal use.

καταστήσετε —‘bring about,’ unusual without a predicative adj.; cf. (Classen) IV. 92 πολλὴν ἄδειαν κατεστήσαμεν.

προδειξάντων —‘as you will have published abroad.’

καὶ εἰ ἠδίκησαν, μὴ προσποιεῖσθαι —‘even if they did wrong, to pass it over.’ μὴ προσποιεῖσθαι , dissimulare, which occurs in several authors, is on the principle of οὔ φημι .

ὅ —‘the element.’ Thuc. is partial to the neut. sing. collective for a masc. plur.

δικαίως —i.e. as strict justiee allows.

δεῖ refers to interest, as in § 4.

τὸ Κλέωνος .—made in c. 40, 4: ‘Cleon's claim, namely the identity of justice and expediency in the punishment, is found to be impossible of being realized at once in such a punishment,’ viz. ἐν τῷ διαφθεῖραι. The sentence is illogical, for either τὸ αὐτό or ἅμα should have been omitted.
