4. 21 Etymologicum Genuinum (AB) Ζῆθος: the hero. For he (A, Ζῆθος in B) and Amphion built the walls of Thebes, as in Apollonius I 735–738. It is derived from the future ζήτω, Ζῆθος, like ἐρίσω, ἔριθος. Or because his mother sought (ἐζήτησεν) to give birth to him easily. Euripides (fr. 181 N.²): ‘τὸν μὲν κίκλησκε Ζῆθον· ἐζήτησε γὰρ τόκοισιν εὐμάρειαν ἡ τεκοῦσά νιν’. — Etymologicum Gudianum 230, 54. 57 Sturz
