Civil Wars

1. καὶ εἰ δίκην ἤδη τοῖς πλείοσι δεδώκοιεν, ἢ καὶ τοῦδε εἶεν. All commentators are agreed that the last two words are corrupt; they convey no meaning. Among the numerous conjectures made by way of emendation that of Bekker seems the most reasonable, viz.: ἢ καὶ δώσοιεν, or would be punished. This reading has been followed in the translation. The Didot Latin version follows that of Schweighäuser, viz.: utrum poenas jam populo dedissent interfectores, aut saltem eas timerent; i.e. whether the murderers had already been punished by the people, or at least feared punishment.
