and supernatural intelligence; for the gods are supposed to know every thing. It is wrong to admit any circumstance that is contrary to reason among the incidents; but if it is unavoidable, it ought to be out of the tragedy as in the Edipus of Sophocles. As tragedy is an imitation of persons of superior excellence to those of the present time, the example of good portrait painters should be followed, who make their pictures more beautiful than the life and yet preserve the likeness.
