ἔστι δὲ τῷ τρόπῳ τούτῳ κτέ.: see above on b 16. προσαγορεύσαντα τὸ ἀλλότριον, scil. ὄνομα, as in Pol. 4. 7, 1293b 39
. The more usual construction in Aristotle is προσαγορεύειν ὀνόματι. In saying προσαγορεύσαντα τὸ ἀλλότριον ἀποφῆσαι τῶν οἰκείων τι he seems to have fallen into a false antithesis. φιάλη, in the illustration, is ἀλλότριον in relation to the shield, and ἄοινος negatives something οἰκεῖον in relation to a cup. Words like ἄοινος come under the general designation of στερήσεις ( Bon. Ind. 699 b 42). The free use of them in the metaphors of poetry is noted in Rhet. 3. 6, 1408a 6
. The instance in Rhet. 3. 11, 1413 a 1 is φόρμιγξ ἄχορδος, a way of describing a bow.

1) ᾔτει δ' ἥρως Tyrwhittus in annot. ad h. 1. scite dedit; Athenaei codices εἰ τῇ δῆλος.
