ORESTES
embracing the sacred image of PALLAS.

Not blood-polluted, nor with hands unclean,
For blunted now and worn the edge of crime
At other shrines, and in the paths of men.

Passing alike o'er continents and seas,
Obedient to the word oracular
Of Loxias, thy sacred shrine I reach,
Thy image, goddess! Taking here my stand,
I will abide the issue of my cause.
