Aeschylus Eumenides 128

Anna Swanwick (Translator)

View: By Card
Chorus
1
Ye upstart gods, time-honoured laws
Down-riding, ye have seized my prey.
780
2
But I, dishonoured, stung by grief,
Woe, woe, my torture to allay,
On all the ground, will cast around
Venom, whose baleful drops shall cause
Where it doth light a sterile blight,
Fatal alike to germ, to leaf.
The pest, O Justice, scouring o'er the plain,
Shall fling abroad its man-destroying stain.
3
I groan anew; what dare? what do?
My pangs the citizens shall rue;
790
Alas, most wretched are thy daughters, Night!
Enduring this dishonourable slight.

Commentary on Aeschylus: Eumenides (Aeschylus. Eumenides. Sidgwick, Arthur, editor. Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1887.)

781. ἐν γᾷ τᾷδε , upon this land : it seems from 1. 800 as if it was meant to be taken here with βαρύκοτος, falling on this land with grievous wrath. The ἐv is the Epic use with verbs of motion like ἐνὶ στήθεσσιν ὀρούσας: cf. πίτνων ἐν δώμασι Cho. 36, φέρουσ᾽ ἐν ἡμῖν Ag. 1450, and again below ἐν χώρᾳ βαλεῖ 1. 787.

782. ἀντιπενθῆ , woe for woe. So the gloss in the Med. rightly explains, ὁμοῖα δρῶντα οἷς πέπονθα.

. Neque subtili disputatione effecit Schoemannus, ut hoc non recte dictum videatur, passa sum quae civibus gravia erunt. Ipse Schoemannus ita fere Aeschylum scripsisse putavit,
στενάζω, τί δέξω; γελῶμαι πολίταις. δύςοιστ᾽ ἔπαθον, ἰώ, ἰώ μεγάλα τοι

Commentary (Arthur Sidgwick, 1887) (OCR draft) (Arthur Sidgwick's commentary on the Eumenides, aligned to the canonical Greek text.) focus

mvp-sidgwick-370-1-1 Wanting in V. Fl. Va. It is clear that it is not this refrain but the second repetition ( ll. 808-822

) that V. Fl. Fa. copied, as they follow M. G. in reading erroneously
ἀντιπαθῆ
l. 812
, and
ἐπεσσυμένος
l. 816
, whereas M. G. have the correct forms in the first refrain.

ἐν γᾷ τᾷδε , upon this land : it seems from l. 800

as if it was meant to be taken here with βαρύκοτος, falling on this land with grievous wrath. The ἐv is the Epic use with verbs of motion like ἐνὶ στήθεσσιν ὀρούσας: cf.
πίτνων ἐν δώμασι
Cho. 36
,
φέρουσ᾽ ἐν ἡμῖν
Ag. 1450
, and again below ἐν χώρᾳ βαλεῖ l. 787 .

ἀντιπενθῆ , woe for woe. So the gloss in the Med. rightly explains, ὁμοῖα δρῶντα οἷς πέπονθα.

mvp-sidgwick-374-1-1 The participle μεθεῖσα has no verb: the verb, as happens occasionally in these long broken sentences, is deferred and finally appears in a different form l. 789

.

mvp-sidgwick-375-1-1 A leafless childless blight-ah! justice!-speeding o'er the land shall scatter on the ground the deadly plague-spots.

mvp-sidgwick-376-1-1 MSS. read:

στενάζω; τί ῥέξω;
γένωμαι· δύσοιστα
πολίταις ἔπαθον.
Perhaps the best emendation is γελῶμαι, I am mocked, a natural exclamation, as Antig. 838 οἴμοι γελῶμαι. [This is adopted by H. D. Hart, etc.]

mvp-sidgwick-376-2-1 δύσοιστα πολίταις ἔπαθον, Grievous to the city shall be my wrongs, i. e. the city shall pay for my ill-treatment. This is the Scholiast's explanation, and perhaps the best.
