Depart home, ye mighty honoured virgin daughters of Night, with a friendly escort. (
But do you speak well- omened words, inhabitants), in the ancient caves beneath the earth highly honoured with honours and burnt victims, and in your happy lot. But applaud all ye people !
And propi tious and benevolent to this land come hither, ye dread powers, and delighted with the blazing torch: and on the way now break forth into songs.
But libations shall be ever in your temples accompanied by torches: to the citizens of Pallas all-seeing Jove and the favouring Fate descend together. Break forth now into sougs.

Remove then from this hallow'd fane,
Daughters of Night, remove your virgin train:
1170
With feſtal pomp, and ſolemn tread,
Reverend your awe-commanding ſtate we lead.
Breathing bleſſings o'er this land
Seek your ancient caves below,
Leading Fortune in your hand,
1175
Breathing bleſſings as you go.
For you the altars riſe, the victims bleed,
And ſacred honours are decreed;
For you the rich libations dew the ground,
Whilſt torches ſpread their blaze around.
1180
Go, in your glory then rejoicing go;
Go, and lead the Fates along,
Joining in this votive ſong;
Whilſt on this city from his throne on high
Jove propitious bends his eye.
1185
Go then; and as you move your friendly train,
Reſponſive to this warbled ſtrain
Harmonious bid your ſwelling voices flow.

Chant.
With loyalty we lead you; proudly go,
Night's childless children, to your home below!
( O citizens, awhile from words forbear!)

To darkness' deep primeval lair,
Far in Earth's bosom, downward fare,
Adored with prayer and sacrifice.
( O citizens, forbear your cries!)
Pass hitherward, ye powers of Dread,
1195
With all your former wrath allayed,
Into the heart of this loved land;
With joy unto your temple wend,
The while upon your steps attend
The flames that feed upon the brand—

Behind them, as they downward fare,
Let holy hands libations bear,
And torches' sacred flame.
All-seeing Zeus and Fate come down
1205
To battle fair for Pallas' town!
Ring out your chant, ring out your joy's acclaim!

Commentary

Commentary on Aeschylus: Eumenides (Aeschylus. Eumenides. Sidgwick, Arthur, editor. Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1887.)

929. κατανασσαμένη , middle, housing in my city. 11. 932, 933. The MSS. read

ὁ δὲ μὴ κύρσας βαρέων τούτων
οὐκ οἶδεν ὅθεν πληγαὶ βιότου.
Now τούτων here must refer to the Furies, as αὗται above and τάσδε below: and consequently βαρέων must be wrong, as (1) it is the wrong gender: (2) even if we suppose (with D.) a fem. form βαρεῶν, it clearly is the wrong sense. What Aeschylus means to say is, He who incurs the wrath of the Furies meets with unexpected calamity: the sins of his fathers bring him into their power.

964. ἐπιβριθής , lit. weighing down upon, falling heavily on: i. e. grievous .

1033. βᾶτε δόμῳ , pass into your home, Epic use of the dat. local after verb of motion, e. g. πεδίῳ πέσε (11. 5. 82), κυνέῃ βάλε (7.187).

1034. παῖδες ἄπαιδες , the MSS. reading, could hardly mean childless children, which seems pointless: it might mean evil children, like vᾶes ἄναες: but the real objection to any such word as ἄπαιδες is that here the words in which the Chorus are addressed are specially reverent and honourable. It is best to reject it and then we get rid also of τύχᾳ τε, meaningless and unmetrical, at the end of 1. 1037.

1036. ὠγυγίοισιν , a strange word of obscure origin, meaning ancient.

1040. εὐθύφρονες , ‘righteously minded,' something like the Homeric αἴσιμα εἰδώς, which is also used of persons well disposed. [Of the suggested alterations Hartung's εὔφρονες ἀστοῖς is the best: but there is no need to alter.]

mvp-comment-302-1 πρέπῃ] In order that the Erinyes, in their new character of Eumenides, may be known henceforth for causing circumstances favourable to the manly character of the citizens. The allusion is perhaps to v. 875.

mvp-comment-303-1 The concluding hymn, sung by escorts who with the goddess head the procession, is very corrupt. In the first verse ἐν δόμῳ should perhaps be δόμους, go to your abodes; in the second, the dactylic metre suggests the omission of Νυκτός. Ιη ν. 990 περίσεπται τύχα τε (τύχαι τε Med.) is hard to correct; perhaps θυσίαισιν ὑπαὶ πυρίσεπτοι. In 996 εἰσόπιν and ἴτων is Linwood's conjecture for ἐς τὸ πᾶν οἴκων. Let libations made by torchlight (i.e. libationbearers) follow behind.

mvp-comment-538-2 δόμῳ d. h. in eure künftige Behausung. Über den Dativ Krüger II § 46, 2, 4 . παῖδες ἄπαιδες, vgl. 69 Νυκτός παλαιαὶ παῖδες, Kinder der Nacht, aber keine Kinder mehr, sondern Greisinnen. Vgl. ἄπολιν πόλιν 460. Das Ephymnion unterbricht den Satz; denn das folgende γᾶς ὑπὸ κεύθεσιν κτέ. schliefst sich an βᾶτε πομπᾷ an.

βᾶτε δόμῳ , pass into your home, Epic use of the dat. local after verb of motion, e. g. πεδίῳ πέσε (11. 5. 82), κυνέῃ βάλε (7.187).

παῖδες ἄπαιδες , the MSS. reading, could hardly mean childless children, which seems pointless: it might mean evil children, like vᾶes ἄναες: but the real objection to any such word as ἄπαιδες is that here the words in which the Chorus are addressed are specially reverent and honourable. It is best to reject it and then we get rid also of τύχᾳ τε, meaningless and unmetrical, at the end of l. 1037

.

ὠγυγίοισιν , a strange word of obscure origin, meaning ancient.

εὐθύφρονες , righteously minded, something like the Homeric αἴσιμα εἰδώς, which is also used of persons well disposed. [Of the suggested alterations Hartung's εὔφρονες ἀστοῖς is the best: but there is no need to alter.]

mvp-sidgwick-473-1-1 Hermann's ξύν is wanted for sense as well as metre: else it would mean rejoicing in the torch, which is a much poorer meaning.

mvp-sidgwick-474-1-1 This line is thoroughly corrupt and it is hopeless to attempt to restore it with any confidence: I take Linwood's conjecture (adopted by H. P. and others), which is ingenious enough: Hermann translates, Let Peace follow with the light of the torch : or σπονδαί may be quite simply 'libations, the natural sign of reconciliation and joy.
