By no means shall I be tired of speaking what is good for you; that you may never say, that you an ancient goddess, did through me a younger, and through men that dwell in cities, depart dishonoured, inhospitably driven from this land. But if indeed the reverence of Persuasion is holy in your eyes, the soothing and winning power of my tongue, you then would remain: but if you are unwilling to remain, neither justly would you bring upon this city any vengeance or anger, or hurt upon the people. For it is in your ehoiee to be a sharer of this land with me at least, duly honoured for ever.

I will not weary of soft words to thee,
That never mayst thou say, Behold me spurned,
An elder by a younger deity,
And from this land rejected and forlorn,
Unhonoured by the men who dwell therein.
1015
But, if Persuasion's grace be sacred to thee,
Soft in the soothing accents of my tongue,
Tarry, I pray thee; yet, if go thou wilt,
Not rightfully wilt thou on this my town
Sway down the scale that beareth wrath and teen
1020
Or wasting plague upon this folk. 'Tis thine,
If so thou wilt, inheritress to be
Of this my land, its utmost grace to win.

Nicht müde werd' ich, rathe dir zum Heile nur;

Dir steht ja frei, dich reichen Grundbesiyes hier

mvp-sidgwick-396-1-1 I adopt (with Franz, Lin. P. Weil, Weck.) L. Dindorf's brilliant conjecture τιμᾶν δαναιᾶν, ancient honours, for the meaningless δαμαίων of MSS. The gods unconquerable wiles have reft me from my ancient honours as of no account.'

ἀπό is separated from the verb αἴρω and draws near to the substantive, as in Epic: one of the forms of the so-called Tmesis. In prose it would be ἀπῆραν. The verb simply means carry off, take away.
