You Attic people now hear the law, judging the first cause of the shedding of blood and moreover this court of judges shall remain hereafter for ever to the people of Ægeus. But for 2

this hill of Mars, the seat and tents of the Amazons, when they came waging war through hatred of Theseus, and then built towers opposite to this new lofty-towered city 3

; and they sacrificed to Mars, whence the rock derives its name, and the hill of Mars—in this [hill], then, the reverence of the citizens, and its ally, fear shall restrain them from acting unjustly, both by day and by night alike, if the citizens themselves do not tamper with 4

the laws. But by an evil influx and by mild polluting the clear water, never wilt thou find a draught. I counsel my citizens with regard 1

to venerate neither anarchy nor tyranny; and not to cast all fear out of the city. For who of mortals, that fears nothing, is just? Awed justly therefore by such an object of reverence, you would have both a defence of your country and safeguard of your city, such as no men possess. Neither among the Scythians nor in the realms of Pelops have I appointed this court. Untouched 2

by gain, venerable, quick to vengeance, a watchful guard over those who sleep 3

. This exhortation, in­ deed, I have extended for my citizens in regard to the future. But it behoves you to rise, and give your votes, and determine the cause reverencing the oath. My say is said.

im Theseusstaate dieser Richterrat bestehn.

685 Den Areshügel kennt ihr. Sitz und Lagerplatz

war er den Amazonen, als ihr Heereszug

bis hierher Theseus voller Wut verfolgend drang.

Sie bauten damals gegenüber meiner Burg

dort eine hohe Burg sich, und sie opferten

690 dem Ares. Davon nennet Hügel man und Stein

nach Ares heut noch. Walten soll von dort der Rat

und taglang, nachtlang allem ungesetzlichen

Gebahren wehren, weckend in der Bürger Brust

Ehrfurcht und Schauder, der der Ehrfurcht Bruder ist.

Es dürfen nur die Bürger die Verfassung nicht

695 durch üblen Zusatz trüben. Wer dem klaren Born

Kotwasser zuführt, findet nimmer reinen Trunk.

Ich rate meinen Bürgern: hütet ehrfurchtsvoll

vor Zügellosigkeit euch wie vor Sklavensinn,

und tilgt nicht alles aus dem Staat, was Schauder weckt.

Vor nichts mehr scheut sich, wer das Schaudern ganz

verlernt.

700 So wahrt denn meine Stiftung in ehrfürcht'ger Scheu,

dann habt für euer ganzes Land ihr einen Hort,

wie keines Volkes Staat ihn, auch der Dorer nicht,

auch des Hyperboreers Unschuld nicht besitzt.

So sei denn dieser Rat geschaffen. Eigennutz

berührt ihn nicht; Erbarmen kennt er, kennt zugleich

705 der Ahndung Schärfe. Friedlich schlummern mag das

Land,

so lange schützend über ihm sein Auge wacht.

Lang' hab' ich diese Mahnung an mein Volk gedehnt;

sie galt der Zukunft. Jetzt erhebt ihr euch, ergreift

ein jeder seinen Stimmstein, gebt das Urteil ab

für oder wider, eingedenk der Eidespflicht,
