And majesty, which was in the olden time unconquered, invincible, unassailed, making its way through the ears and the mind of the people, is now banished. And somebody 1 is terrified. But to be prosperous-this is both a god and more than a god among mortals. And the swift turn of Justice visits some in daylight, and some lingering burst forth with violence in the interval of darkness, and some impracticable night possesses 2 .

Einst folgte dem mächtig gebietenden Wort
55 ehrfürchtigen Volks
nie murrender treuer Gehorsam.
Das ist vorüber. Furcht allein fühlen sie;

bringt manchem bittres Weh;
65 und manchen auch birgt die Nacht,
eh' die Sühne kam.

ELECTRA
Oh! cherished darling of thy father's house,
Hope of our race, thou precious seed, long wept,
Trusting in thy strong arm thou shalt regain
Thy natal home. O fondly loved, in whom
230
Centre four dear affections; for perforce,
Thee I must hail as father, and on thee
Love for my mother, justly hated, falls;
And for my sister, pitilessly slain.
My faithful brother hast thou ever been,
My pride, my awe;-only may Justice, Strength,
With Zeus supreme, third Saviour, aid thy cause.
ORESTES
Zeus, Zeus, beholder be thou of these woes;-
Mark the young brood, reft of their eagle-sire,
Who perished in the folds, the snaky toils
240
Of direful serpent;-orphaned they endure
The pangs of hunger; not yet strong of wing
To carry to the nest the eagle's prey.
So mayest thou behold us twain, myself,
And her, Electra, offspring sire-bereft,
Thus doomed to common exile from our home.

Rumour of might, unquestioned, unsubdued,
65
Pervading ears and soul of lesser men,
Is silent now and dead.
Yet rules a viler dread;
For bliss and power, however won,
As gods, and more than gods, dazzle our mortal ken.
70
Justice doth mark, with scales that swiftly sway,
Some that are yet in light;
Others in interspace of day and night,
Till Fate arouse them, stay;
And some are lapped in night, where all things are undone. 1

Die niebezwungne, niegebeugte Siegerin,
Die Scheu, die des Volkes Ohr und Herz erfüllte,
Schwindet nun dahin: denn wer 1
Fürchtet noch? Das Glück allein,
Das ist der Gott der Menschen, ist noch mehr als Gott.
65
Doch Einen rafft am hellen Tag
Des Rechtes Wage schnell dahin;
Den drückt sie machtvoll, säumend zwar, 2
Im Dämmerlicht nieder in Staub;
Den hüllt ewige Nacht ein.
70
Dritte Strophe.

περαίνειν steht im Sinne von περᾶν, vgl. Pind. Pyth. Χ 28 περαίνει πρὸς ἔσχατον πλόον.
