Nay, now, when thou seest me in person, thou hardly knowest me, but when thou didst see your brother's shorn ringlet of mourning hair which corresponded with thine own head, and wast tracing thy footsteps in the track of my feet, thou wast all of a flutter, and didst fancy thou sawest me. Consider the ringlet of my hair, after placing it on the part whence I clipped it; and behold this web, the work of thy hand, and the strokes of the shuttle, and on it the delineation of wild beasts 2 . Be yourself 3 , and be not over-amazed in soul through joy, for I know that the dearest relatives are bitter foes to us twain.

When off'red on the tomb thou ſaw’ſt these locks,
When with thy own th' impreſſions of my feet
Were meaſur’d, joy gave wings to expectation,
And imag’d me before thee.

Shorn from thy brother’s head; obſerve them well,

Or che mi scorgi, tu non mi conosci;
e prima, nel veder solo una ciocca
delle chiome fraterne, eri esaltata,
e ti sembrava di vedermi, e andavi

investigando le mie tracce. Accosta
qui, donde fu reciso, questo ricciolo
simile alle tue chiome, e osserva. Guarda
questo tessuto: la trama dei pettini,
le forme vedi delle fiere: è opera

della tua mano! Frenati!

My very face thou see'st and know'st me not,
And yet but now, when thou didst see the lock
Shorn for my father's grave, and when thy quest
265
Was eager on the footprints I had made,
Even I, thy brother, shaped and sized as thou,
Fluttered thy spirit, as at sight of me!
Lay now this ringlet whence 'twas shorn, and judge,
And look upon this robe, thine own hands' work,
270
The shuttle-prints, the creature wrought thereon—
Refrain thyself, nor prudence lose in joy,
For well I wot, our kin are less than kind.
