But, that you may learn, I of a truth know to what issue it will come 1 : as though with horses of a charioteer I am wandering wide of the course; for thoughts hard to be con- trolled are hurrying me away overcome by them. And at my heart fear is ready to sing or dance in phrensy.
But while I am still in my senses, I make declaration to my friends, and assert that with justice I slew my mother, an abomination, murdering my father, and detested of the gods. And as for my provocatives to this daring, I prize most highly Loxias, the prophet of Pytho, who announced to me by oracle, that if I did this I should be beyond the reach of evil censure; but if I had neglected it, I will not tell the penalty; for no one will arrive at the agonies by conjecture. And now behold me, how arrayed with this branch and chaplet I will draw nigh unto the central shrine, the spot trodden by 2 Loxias, and the blaze of fire that hath been called imperish- able, fleeing from this kindred blood: nay Loxias charged me not to betake myself to any other shrine. And I bid all the Argives bear witness to me, how that after a lapse of time these evils were dealt out by me: but I a vagabond, estranged from this land, living and dying having left this fame.

Uditemi ora ch'io, come l'auriga
940
945
udite il bando che agli amici lancio,
sin che mi regge il senno. Io, lo confesso,
mia madre uccisi, odio dei Numi, obbrobrio
omicida del padre — e fu giustizia.
E chi mi spinse a tale audacia fu,
950
io me n'esalto, il pitico profeta,
l'ambiguo Febo. Vaticinio ei diede
che s'io compiessi il matricidio, immune
d'ogni colpa sarei; se m'astenessi
la pena non dirò: tanto lontano
955
di niun cordoglio non saetta l'arco.
Ed or vedete: in questa foggia io movo,
con questo serto e questo ramo supplice,
all'umbilico della terra, al piano
d'Apollo e al tempio, e al vampo inestinguibile
960

Apollon. Wenn ich's thäte, sprach der Sehergott,
so würde niemand einer Frevelthat mich zeih'n;
Nun seht mich an. Ich rüste mich. Mit diesem
Zweig

Hark ye and learn—for what the end shall be
For me I know not: breaking from the curb
My spirit whirls me off, a conquered prey,
Borne as a charioteer by steeds distraught
Far from the course, and madness in my breast
1140
Burneth to chant its song, and leap, and rave—
Hark ye and learn, friends, ere my reason goes!
I say that rightfully I slew my mother,
A thing God-scorned, that foully slew my sire.
And chiefest wizard of the spell that bound me
1145
Unto this deed I name the Pythian seer
Apollo, who foretold that if I slew,
The guilt of murder done should pass from me;
But if I spared, the fate that should be mine
I dare not blazon forth—the bow of speech
1150
Can reach not to the mark, that doom to tell.
And now behold me, how with branch and crown
I pass, a suppliant made meet to go
Unto Earth's midmost shrine, the holy ground
Of Loxias, and that renownèd light
1155
Of ever-burning fire, to 'scape the doom
Of kindred murder: to no other shrine,
So Loxias bade, may I for refuge turn.
Bear witness, Argives, in the after time,
How came on me this dread fatality.
1160
Living, I pass a banished wanderer hence,
To leave in death the memory of this cry.

Schon beginnt in meiner Brust
Wenn ich die That ausführte, wär' ich ohne Schuld;
1025
1030
Zu jenem Feuerglanze, den man ewig nennt,
Der Mutter Blut zu fliehen! Einem andern Herd
Mich zuzuwenden, wehrte mir des Gottes Spruch.
Wohl wird dereinst mir alles Volk in Argos' Reich
Bezeugen, welcher Jammer mir bereitet ward;
1035
