Behold ye the two sovereigns of the realm and the pillagers of this mansion that murdered my father. Proud were they, when sitting on their thrones, and now too [are they] loving, as we may guess from what has befallen them, and the oath remains to their pledges [unbroken] 4 . They conspired indeed [to work] the death of my unhappy father, and to die together; and this result is according to the oath. Furthermore behold ye 1 ,—ye that are hearers of these ills, the contrivance, the shackles of my unhappy father, both the fet- ters for his hands and the yoke for his feet! Stretch it out, and standing round in a circle display the robe that enshrouded the hero, in order that the father may see—not mine, but he that beholdeth all these things, the Sun—the unhallowed doings of my mother; that so he may be present to me in my trial some future time, as an evidence, that with justice I pro- secuted this doom; of my mother I mean, for I am not speak- ing of that of Aegisthus, for he has undergone the sentence of an adulterer, as the law prescribes. But she who plotted this detestable deed against a husband, from whom she had been wont to bear the burthen of children beneath her zone—a burthen once dear, but now, as is plain, an hostile ill—what thinkest thou? assuredly she was a conger, or a viper 2 , that could canker by a touch one who had not suffered from her bite, by reason of her daring and her unrighteous spirit; what shall I call it, and succeed in giving it a correct name? a snare for a wild beast, or a canopy of a bath that enshrouded the feet of the dead ? nay rather, thou mightest call it a net or toils, and a robe for snaring the feet. A thing like this a robber might have in his possession; one that deceives stran- gers, that leads a life of plunder, and cutting off many by this device, he might nurse many a hot deed in his mind. Be never woman like this an inmate in my house: sooner may I be doomed by the gods to die childless.

Ecco di questa terra i due tiranni,
885
890
giurarono dar morte, e insiem soccombere:
e i loro voti esauditi furono.
E voi, presenti a questi orridi fatti,
mirate anche l'ordigno, il laccio teso
al mio povero padre, i ceppi duplici
895
onde aggiogati e mani e piedi furono.
Dispiegatelo, in giro collocatevi:
900
l'empio misfatto di mia madre, scorga,
e siami teste nel giudizio, ch'io
compiuta a dritto ho la materna strage.
Quella d'Egisto non la dico. Adultero,
come legge dimanda ebbe castigo.
905
910
che, pur col tocco, senza morso, attossica?
Come lo chiamerò? Qual nome è giusto?
Rete da fiera? o involucro talare
di funerea bara? Laccio chiamalo,
chiamalo rete, pastoia dei piedi.
915
Tali strumenti l'assassino adopera

des Mordes mit vertrete - nur den Muttermord;
990 Aigisthos zählt nicht. Was dem Ehrenschänder recht,

There lies our country's twofold tyranny,
My father's slayers, spoilers of my home.
Erst were they royal, sitting on the throne,
And loving are they yet,—their common fate
Tells the tale truly, shows their trothplight firm.
1085
They swore to work mine ill-starred father's death,
They swore to die together; 'tis fulfilled.
O ye who stand, this great doom's witnesses,
Behold this too, the dark device which bound
My sire unhappy to his death,—behold
1090
The mesh which trapped his hands, enwound his feet!
Stand round, unfold it—'tis the trammel-net
That wrapped a chieftain; hold it that he see,
The father—not my sire, but he whose eye
Is judge of all things, the all-seeing Sun!
1095
Let him behold my mother's damnèd deed,
Then let him stand, when need shall be to me,
Witness that justly I have sought and slain
My mother; blameless was Ægisthus' doom—
He died the death law bids adulterers die.
1100
But she who plotted this accursèd thing
To slay her lord, by whom she bare beneath
Her girdle once the burden of her babes,
Beloved erewhile, now turned to hateful foes—
What deem ye of her? or what venomed thing,
1105
Sea-snake or adder, had more power than she
To poison with a touch the flesh unscarred?
So great her daring, such her impious will.
How name her, if I may not speak a curse?
A lion-springe? a laver's swathing cloth,
1110
Wrapping a dead man, twining round his feet—
A net, a trammel, an entangling robe?
Such were the weapon of some strangling thief,
The terror of the road, a cut-purse hound—
With such device full many might he kill,
1115
Full oft exult in heat of villainy.
Ne'er have my house so cursed an indweller—
Heaven send me, rather, childless to be slain?

Da sehet an des Landes stolzes Herrscherpaar,
965
985
Des Helios, was meine Mutter Grauses that!
Der Mutter; von Aegisthos' Tode red' ich nicht;
995
Ob ihrer Frechheit, ihres kühn ruchlosen Sinns?
Solch eine Hausfrau wohne nie an meinem Herd,
Niemals! O Götter, stürb' ich eher kinderlos!

Ζη παρασταδόν vgl. Hom.
