My child, the consuming jaws of fire quell not the spirit of the dead, but afterwards he shows his wrath. But the dead is bewailed with a funeral moan, and he that wronged him is discovered. A righteous grief for fathers and for parents, stirred up on all sides, investigates the whole.

The body of the dead, touch not the ſoul;

Its wrath: yet for the dead our ſorrows riſe.
Mean while th' oppreſſor ſtands a ſignal mark;
And the juſt griefs of fathers and of ſons
With restless ſearch trace all around for vengeance.

che riposo ancor non trovano,
alti e giusti ammoniscono i lamenti!

O child, the spirit of the dead,
Altho' upon his flesh have fed
The grim teeth of the flame,
385
Is quelled not; after many days
The sting of wrath his soul shall raise,
A vengeance to reclaim!
To the dead rings loud our cry—
Plain the living's treachery—
390
Swelling, shrilling, urged on high,
The vengeful dirge, for parents slain,
Shall strive and shall attain.

O Kind, des Abgeschiednen Geist bewältigt niemals
Zermalmenden Feuers Zahn;
Spät noch zeigt er den Ingrimm.
Den Entseelten feiert Wehruf,
330
