But, O ye mighty destinies, vouchsafe ye, by the will of Jove, that it may end in the way which Justice takes. "In return for a hostile speech be a hostile speech paid back"— cries Justice aloud as she exacts the debt,-" and in return for a murderous blow let him suffer a murderous blow." DOER MUST SUFFER; thus saith a thrice-antique saw.

Und ihr Lenker der Geschicke droben,
führt zu solchem Ausgang diese Sache,
dafs das Recht am Ziel befriedigt stehe.
'Wo die Zunge schlug mit argem Worte,
310 räche sich mit argem Wort die Zunge',
laut verkündet Dike, nimm dein Recht.
Und wer Todeswunde schlug, empfahe
Todeswunde, was er that, das leid' er:
'Blut um Blut'. Es ist ein alter Spruch.

Mighty Fates, on you we call!
Bid the will of Zeus ordain
Power to those, to whom again
Justice turns with hand and aid!
365
Grievous was the prayer one made—
Grievous let the answer fall!
Where the mighty doom is set,
Justice claims aloud her debt.
Who in blood hath dipped the steel,
370
Deep in blood her meed shall feel!
List an immemorial word—
Whosoe'er shall take the sword
Shall perish by the sword.

gewaltige Schicksalsmächte, mit Zeus
310
Vollendet es so,
Wie das Recht mitwandelnd den Pfad zeigt!
„Für feindliches Wort sei feindliches Wort
Vollgültiger Lohn!" ruft Dike, die Schuld
Einfordernd, mit mächtiger Stimme.
315
„Für blutigen Mord sei blutiger Mord
Als Buße gesezt! Wer frevelte, büßt!"
So sagen die Sprüche der Väter.
Erste Strophe.

Cho. El. Kor. Or. Cho, El. Kor. Or. Cho. El. Kor. Or. Cho. El.
