Nay, but the oracle no songer shall be peering forth from a veil 1 after the manner of a new-married bride; but clear it seems it will come, blowing towards the rising of the sun, so that a woe much greater than this will, like a wave, dash up against the light. And no longer will I instruct thee by means, of enigmas. And do you, coursing with me, bear witness how I scent the track of evils wrought of old. For a quire that sings in concert, not sweetly, (for 'tis not of good they sing,) never at any time leaves this palace here before us. And truly, having quaffed human blood, so as to riot more, a revel of sister Furies abides in the house, hard to be sent forth : and as they sit on the house-top they hymn a hymn 2 , the ancestral curse : and they in turn loathe the brother's coueh. deadly to him that trampled on it. Did I miss, or hunt I like some archer? or am I a lying, street-door, babbling witch? Testify to me, after first making oath that I accurately know the ancient iniquities of the palace.

forfaits anciens.

The oracle no more ſhall ſhroud its viſage

Ora non piú come novella sposa
di sotto ai veli guarderà l'oracolo;
ma con impetuoso alito, contro

il sol che sorge lo vedrai lanciarsi,
sí che a guisa di flutto innalzerà
verso la luce una sciagura immane
piú assai che questa.
Non per via d'enigmi

piú vi favellerò. Voi mi sarete
testimonî, se so con nari acute
correr su l'orme di misfatti antichi.
Mai questa casa non diserta un coro
concorde, e pure ingrato: che di bene
1375
giammai non favellò.
D' umano sangue
abbeverata, per piú ardire, sta
dentro la casa la selvaggia schiera
delle cognate Erinni, e niun la scaccia.

Entro i tetti annidate, un inno levano
per lo scempio primiero;
e obbrobrio sputano
sopra il giaciglio del fratello, imprecano
a chi lo violò.
1385
M' inganno forse,
o, come destro arciero, il segno tocco?
Son cianciatrice che alle porte mèndica?
Confessa e giura fin d'ora, ch' io so
di questa casa le misfatte antiche.

List! for no more the presage of my soul,
Bride-like, shall peer from its secluding veil;
1355
But as the morning wind blows clear the east,
More bright shall blow the wind of prophecy,
And as against the low bright line of dawn
Heaves high and higher yet the rolling wave,
So in the clearing skies of prescience
1360
Dawns on my soul a further, deadlier woe,
And I will speak, but in dark speech no more.
Bear witness, ye, and follow at my side—
I scent the trail of blood, shed long ago.
Within this house a choir abidingly
1365
Chants in harsh unison the chant of ill;
Yea, and they drink, for more enhardened joy,
Man's blood for wine, and revel in the halls,
Departing never, Furies of the home.
They sit within, they chant the primal curse,
1370
Each spitting hatred on that crime of old,
The brother's couch, the love incestuous
That brought forth hatred to the ravisher.
Say, is my speech or wild and erring now,
Or doth its arrow cleave the mark indeed?
1375
They called me once, The prophetess of lies,
The wandering hag, the pest of every door—
Attest ye now, She knows in very sooth
The house's curse, the storied infamy.

Verhüllt hervorschau'n, gleich der neuvermählten Braut;
