Fraternal in very truth! and utterly undone were they by a severing in no wise amicable, by phrenzied strife at the consummation of their feud.
Hapless youths! They have obtained their portion of heaven-awarded woes, and beneath their bodies shall be a fathomless wealth of earth ! Alas! ye that have made your houses bloom with many troubles! And at its fall these Curses raised the shout of triumph in shrill strain, when the race had been put to flight in total rout; a trophy of Atè has been reared at the gate at which they smote each other, and, having overcome both, the daemon rested.
Enter Antigone and Ismene.
When wounded thou didst wound again .

Grief, that rends the tortur'd breast,
Deep with real woes possest,
1025
Tears fast streaming from her eyes
From the haunts of pleasure flies,
Anguish, misery all her own,
Sadly pours the hollow groan;
Whilft the ruin'd palace round
1030
Echo answers to the sound;
And, each frightful pause between,
From her airy shell unseen,
Listens to the funeral strain,
Wailing the unhappy slain;
1035
Wailing all the dreadful woes
That from madding discord rose;
Many' a friend among the dead,
Whilst the hostile legions bleed.
They have the wretched share they chose,
Share of heav'n-appointed woes s :
1065
And the rich, contested prize
Deep beneath earth's bosom lies.
Wounded thou gaveſt the fatal wound.

Eran fratelli! E pel dissidio infesto
1030
e per la furia dissennata, giunsero,
nell'urto ultimo, a termine funesto.
Or tregua ebbe la lite.
Commiste nella polvere,
di sangue intrisa, vedi ambe le vite.
1035
Or consanguinee son!
Disciolse i nodo
de le liti fra lor l'ospite Càlibo
temprato al fuoco, in questo amaro modo:
le sciolse il ferro. Con amare mani
1040
Marte partiva i beni: i voti d'Edipo
non volle, il tristo, che cadesser vani.
Miseri! La sua parte ognun riscosse
di mali che ad ognun partiano i Superi.
Ora un abisso è sotto le lor fosse
1045
di dovizia infinita.
Ahimè, di quanti spasimi
la stirpe vostra fu per voi fiorita!
Intonava l'Erinni in su le schiatta
l'ululo di vittoria, il fiero cantico,
1050
poi che fu spersa, all'ultima disfatta.
Il trofeo d'Ate stette su le soglie,
ove cadder colpiti. E quivi il dèmone
desisté, poi che d'ambi ebbe le spoglie.
Colpito colpisti.

Yea, from one seed they sprang, and by one fate
Their heritage is desolate,
The heart's division sundered claim from claim,
And, from their feud, death came!
Now is their hate allayed,
950
Now is their life-stream shed,
Ensanguining the earth with crimson dye—
Lo, from one blood they sprang, and in one blood they lie!
A grievous arbiter was given the twain—
The stranger from the northern main,
955
The sharp, dividing sword,
Fresh from the forge and fire
The War-god treacherous gave ill award
And brought their father's curse to a fulfilment dire!
They have their portion—each his lot and doom,
960
Given from the gods on high!
Yea, the piled wealth of fatherland, for tomb,
Shall underneath them lie!
Alas, alas! with flowers of fame and pride
Your home ye glorified;
965
But, in the end, the Furies gathered round
With chants of boding sound,
Shrieking, In wild defeat and disarray,
Behold, ye pass away!
The sign of Ruin standeth at the gate,
970
There, where they strove with Fate—
And the ill power beheld the brothers' fall,
And triumphed over all!
(Processional Chant)
Thou wert smitten, in smiting,
Thou didst slay, and wert slain—
975
By the spear of each other
Ye lie on the plain,
And ruthless the deed that ye wrought was, and ruthless the death of the twain!
Take voice, O my sorrow!
Flow tear upon tear—
980
Lay the slain by the slayer,
Made one on the bier!
