But the gods have a power superior still, and oft in adversity does this raise the helpless out of severe calamity, when clouds are overhanging his brow.
'Tis by the blessing of the gods that we inhabit a city unconquered, and that our fortification is proof against the multitude of our enemies. What Nemesis can feel offended at this?
When I heard the sudden din, I came, on the very instant, in distracting panic to this Acropolis, a hallowed seat.
And I do in truth hear the snortings of the horses.

Yet in the Gods is a superior pow'r,
235
Which often in afflictions clears away
Th' impenetrable cloud, whose sullen gloom
Sharp misery hung before our darken'd eyes.
That we possess our city yet unconquer'd,
That yet our tow'rs repel th' assailing foe,
Is from the Gods: from them our voice calls down
Further success: Why should this move thy anger?
245
Affrighted at the sudden din of war,
And trembling with my fears, with hasty foot
250
I sought this citadel, this sacred seat.
Distinct I hear the fireyneighing steed.

'Tis true: yet stronger is the power divine,
And oft, when man's estate is overbowed
With bitter pangs, disperses from his eyne
190
The heavy, hanging cloud!
By grace of the gods we hold it, a city untamed of the spear,
195
And the battlement wards from the wall the foe and his aspect of fear!
What need of displeasure herein?
Alack, it is fresh in mine ears, the clamour and crash of the fray,
And up to our holiest height I sped on my timorous way,
Bewildered, beset by the din!
Ah, but the snorting of the steeds I hear!

Doch weit höher ragt, höher der Götter Macht;
215
Was ergrimmt der Tadel drob?
Als ich des Kampfes wildtosenden Sturm vernahm,
220
