Thee, the contriver, thee full of gall and bitterness, who sinned against the gods by bestowing their honours on creatures of a day, the thief of fire, I address. The Sire commands thee to divulge of what nuptials it is that thou art vaunting, by means of which he is to be put down from his power. And these things, moreover, without any kind of mystery, but each exactly as it is, do thou tell out; and entail not upon me, Prometheus, a double journey; and thou perceivest that by such conduct Jove is not softened.

Thou doeſt thy meſſage proudly, in high terms,
Becoming well the ſervant of ſuch lords.
Your youthful pow'r is new; yet vainly deem ye
Your highrais'd tow'rs, impregnable to pain:
1000
Have I not ſeen two ſovereigns m of the ſky
Sink from their glorious ſtate? And I ſhall ſee
A third, this preſent lord, with ſudden ruin
Diſhonorably fall. What, ſeem I now
To dread, to tremble at these newrais'd gods?
1005
That never ſhall their force extort from me.
Hence then, the way thou cameſt return with ſpeed:
Thy vain inquiries get no other anſwer.

Thou, double-dyed in gall of bitterness,
Trickster and sinner against gods, by giving

The stolen fire to perishable men!
Attend—the Sire supreme doth bid thee tell
What is the wedlock which thou vauntest now,
Whereby he falleth from supremacy?
Speak forth the whole, make all thine utterance clear,

Have done with words inscrutable, nor cause
To me, Prometheus! any further toil
Or twofold journeying. Go to—thou seëst
Zeus doth not soften at such words as thine!

Kundthun, der ihn vom Königsthrone stürzen soll.

Zweimal, Prometheus, herzugeh'n. Wohl siehst du ja,

Daß Zeus durch solche Dinge nicht geschmeidig wird.

Notes on the current edition

Prometheus Bound

1. Two-source OCR draft: unmatched words are bracketed; readings, punctuation, possible marginalia and note boundaries remain unverified. Agreement between OCR sources is not proof of correctness.

941. ἀλλ᾽ εἰσορῶ γάρ : cp. Eur. Here, however, a contemptuous designation of the di- vine messenger, as διάκονος τοῦ νέου τυράννου. So throughout the following scene Hermes is treated with lofty disdain by Prometheus. The phrase Διὸς τρόχις suffices for the spectators, without mention of the name. τρό- χις furthermore alludes to Hermes's winged shoes, and it is probable that he is swung from above upon the stage, by means of the αἰώρημα (see on 284).
