XXXV. simulque eam suspicionem alio firmare studuit argumento. Ariomardus, inquit, supra 38. Thebarum praefectus erat. Cur igitur Sardibus luctuosa esset eius mors? Hoc, ut opinor, sentiens scholiastes addit,

Repugnantia autem illa circa patriam Ariomardi nulla prorsus est, si scholiastam, recte et prudenter monentem, audire voles. Nam, ut satis ex Herodoto intelligi potest, non suis quisque popularibus erat praefectus, nisi qui inferioris ordinis duces erant, uti VII. 96. 97. narrat, sed ut quisque apud regem vel generis propinquitate vel gratia dignissimus censebatur, ita ei alia atque alia committebatur provincia. Quamobrem etsi Herodotus VII. 67. 68. duos in exercitu Persarum memorat Ariomardos, tamen Aeschylum, qui nullo eos nomine distinguit, sed semper ut de uno loquitur, unum eundemque ubique in mente habuisse certissimum est. Qui si Sardibus natus Aegyptiis praefuit, tantum abest ut non recte dicatur Sardibus luctuosus obisse, ut, si haec esset repugnantia, simul duo alii loci in eandem vitii suspicionem inciderent. Nam ipse ille quem Porsonus commemorat Arceus vel Arcteus, qui v. 45. dux vocatur Lydorum qui Sardibus advenerant, v. 306. dicitur

Chryse, Name meh- rerer Inseln und einer Stadt in Troas. μελαίνης geht wohl nicht auf die Farbe der Pferde, sondern der Reiter. – πυρσήν steht als pro- leptisches Prädikat. Der schwarze Bart färbte sich im Blute rot. Vgl. 539. πορφυρᾶ βαφῇ d. i. βαφῇ αἵματος. Vgl. Hom. 141. – Μᾶγος entweder weil in der Zeit des Äschylos die Quantität noch nicht festgestellt war, oder weil Äschylos den medischen Volksstamm (Herod. I 101. Strab. XVII p. 727. Plin. n. h. VI 26, 29) von der gleichnamigen Priesterkaste (irrigerweise) unter- scheiden zu müssen glaubte. – μέτ- οικος dort sich (unfreiwillig, als Toter) niederlassend, dort bleibend.
