Consider, and be most justly a pious receiver of strangers, betray not the exile driven from afar by godless expulsion:
nor behold me dragged as a pledge from the seats sacred to many gods, O you who possess the whole sway of the land. But consider the insolence of men, and guard against their wrath.
In nowise endure to behold the suppliant led from the images in spite of Justice, like a steed, and the seizing of my fillets and robes woven with many threads.
For know, whatever you determine, there awaits your children and your house to suffer a like justice. Consider these just commands of Jove.

tant de dieux, ô maître suprême d'Argos. Comprends la démesure des mâles;

Deliberate then with prudent care:
To thy counſels take with thee
Heav'ncommercing piety,
And be ſtedfaſt juſtice near.
Hark! methinks I hear them ſay,
490
Do not, mighty king, betray
Wretched exiles wand'ring far.
See me not with ruffian hand,
Refug'd at this ſhrine, profan'd,
Learn what boiſt'rous man may dare.
495
See me not with ruffled veſt t
Rent unfeemly from my breaſt,
Looſe my treſſes waving round,
Bridled with this golden brede,
Led, like a reluctant ſteed,
500
From the Gods that guard this ground.
See each hallow'd image here,
And the aweful pow'rs revere :
At thy feet thy ſuppliant laid,
Mighty monarch, hear and aid !
505
And know, to thee, thy houſe, thy riſing race
Impartial juſtice ſhall repay the deed;
With glory's radiant crown thy virtues grace,
And righteous Jove ſhall ſanctify the meed.

Yea, counsel take and stand to aid
At Justice' side and mine.
Betray not me, the timorous maid
460
Whom far beyond the brine
A godless violence cast forth forlorn.
O King, wilt thou behold—
Lord of this land, wilt thou behold me torn
From altars manifold?
465
Bethink thee of the young men's wrath and lust,
Hold off their evil pride;
Steel not thyself to see the suppliant thrust
From hallowed statues' side,
Haled by the frontlet on my forehead bound,
470
As steeds are led, and drawn
By hands that drag from shrine and altar-mound
My vesture's fringèd lawn.
Know thou that whether for Aegyptus' race
Thou dost their wish fulfil,
475
Or for the gods and for each holy place—
Be thy choice good or ill,
Blow is with blow requited, grace with grace.
Such is Zeus' righteous will.

erstes Epeisodion. 1.

Uber die Konjunktivform τλας (die Handschrift gibt τ' ἀαΐς, d.i. ΤΛΑΙΣ) vgl. H. L. Ahrens Dor. Dial. S. 313. Sie entspricht der Form τιμᾶς. 4361. βίᾳ δίκης, wider Recht, wie Soph. Ant. 59 νόμου βίᾳ. Ge- nauere Responsion würde erzielt, wenn man für δίκας ἀγομέναν schriebe διασοβουμέναν.
