My children, it behoves us to be prudent: and ye have come with me your prudent faithful aged father conductor of your voyage. And with respect to your behaviour on land now I bid you assume 6
prudence to observe my words, engraving them on your minds. I see dust, the voiceless messenger of an army; the axle-driven naves are not silent, and I behold a bucklered and spear-brandishing crowd, with horses, and curved chariots. Perhaps the rulers of this land may be advancing to us as spies, having heard [of us] from messengers. But whether harmless, or enraged 1
with fell wrath, they are rushing on this train, it is better, on every account, O virgins, to sit down at this mound of the gods who preside over assemblies. But an altar is better than a tower, an unbroken shield. But as quickly as possible go, and holding reverently in your left 2
hands the white-wreathed suppliant boughs, ornaments of awful Jove, reply to the strangers with modest and sad and fitting words, as becomes those in a strange land, clearly relating these your bloodless flights. But first indeed let not boldness of voice follow, and let no vain look proceed from your modest foreheads, and quiet eye. And be not first to speak nor tedious in your talk: the people in this country greatly dislike it. But be sure to yield: you are a needy stranger exile; for it becomes not the lowly to be bold of speech.

Daughters, this hour demands your utmoſt
prudence;
Your father's care, your old and faithful pilot,
Hath held your helm ſafe o'er the dangerous deep;
Behoves you now at land with provident heed
195
To form your counſels, and attentive mark
My words.
Yon' cloud of duſt, tho' tongueleſs,
ſpeaks
An army nigh;
200
I hear their wheels of braſs
Loud rattling on their axles;
now I view
Chariots and horſe diſtinct, and ſhields, and ſpears
Far gleaming o'er the plain;
205
the lords perchance
That rule these realms, inform'd of our arrival,
Advance to us;
but bring they minds of peace,
Guiltless of violence, or with ruthless rage
210
Ruſh on this train, beſt ſit together, virgins,
Around this altar ſacred to the Gods i
Preſiding o'er the games:
a ſurer refuge
Than tow or ſhield warproof an altar gives.
215
Go then with ſpeed, and reverent in your hands
Hold forth these ſupplicating branches crown'd
With ſnowy wreaths, enſigns of aweful Jove.
With modest, grave, and decent ſpeech receive
Theſe ſtrangers, as beſeems the wretched ſtate
220
Of unknown ſupplicants;
declare at once
Diſtinct and brief the motives of your flight
Unſtain'd with blood:
let not your roving eye
225
Dart the bold glance, impeaching modeſty.
Be not thy voice heard firſt, nor let its anſwers
Weary their ear; they quickly take offence;
Submiſſive urge thy plea, rememb'ring well
The pride of words ill ſuits thy low eſtate,
230
A fugitive, a ſtranger, in diſtreſs.

di senno è questo vostro antico padre:
ei vi fu guida su le navi; ed ora
190
aralda muta: odo bronzine stridere
degli assi al rotear: scorgo una turba
195
di scudi armata e di crollanti lancie,
con curvi cocchi e destrïeri. Certo
sono i signor' di questa terra: edotti
già dai lor nunzî, a esaminarci giungono.
O sia che innocua questa schiera appressi,
200
o acuto il cuore d'ira cruda, il meglio
è, figlie mie, scampar su questo clivo
ove i Numi han consesso. È piú che torre
sicura un'ara: è scudo non frangibile.
Presto, presto!, movete; e i rami supplici
205
ghirlandati di bende, a Giove sacri,
compostamente nella manca stretti,
dignitose parole e parche e flebili,
come conviene a stranïer che giunge,
ai forestieri rivolgete; e chiaro
210
narrate a lor questa incruenta fuga.
E pria dal vostro labbro in bando vada
ogni alterigia: verità da visi
modesti spiri, da sereno ciglio:
né si prolissa o garrula: ché molto
215
n'han qui fastidio; e mostrati arrendevole :
sei bisognosa di soccorso e profuga:
né conviene ai da meno audace labbro.

Children, be wary—wary he with whom
Ye come, your trusty sire and steersman old:
And that same caution hold I here on land,
200
And bid you hoard my words, inscribing them
On memory's tablets. Lo, I see afar
Dust, voiceless herald of a host, arise;
And hark, within their griding sockets ring
Axles of hurrying wheels! I see approach,
205
Borne in curved cars, by speeding horses drawn,
A speared and shielded band. The chiefs, perchance,
Of this their land are hitherward intent
To look on us, of whom they yet have heard
By messengers alone. But come who may,
210
And come he peaceful or in ravening wrath
Spurred on his path, 'twere best, in any case,
Damsels, to cling unto this altar-mound
Made sacred to their gods of festival,—
A shrine is stronger than a tower to save,
215
A shield that none may cleave. Step swift thereto,
And in your left hands hold with reverence
The white-crowned wands of suppliance, the sign
Beloved of Zeus, compassion's lord, and speak
To those that question you, words meek and low
220
And piteous, as beseems your stranger state,
Clearly avowing of this flight of yours
The bloodless cause; and on your utterance
See to it well that modesty attend;
From downcast eyes, from brows of pure control,
225
Let chastity look forth; nor, when ye speak,
Be voluble nor eager—they that dwell
Within this land are sternly swift to chide.
And be your words submissive: heed this well;
For weak ye are, outcasts on stranger lands,
230
And froward talk beseems not strengthless hands.

165
Ich sehe Staub, des Heeres stummen Boten, dort;
In wildem Unmuth stürmend uns entgegenzieh'n:
Für alle Fälle, Mädchen, ist es dienlicher,
Ihr lagert euch an dieser Kampfgottheiten Herd.
175
Altäre schirmen besser als Burgwall und Schild.
Geht ungesäumt denn, nehmt die wollumwundenen
Delzweige, Zeus', des hochverehrten, Feierschmuck,
Und haltet sie mit frommen Händen fromm empor;
Verschämt, in sanfter Klage sprecht das Nöthige
180
In eurer Stimme künde sich nichts Freches an;
Aus stillem Antlig mit bescheidner Stirne muß
Das Auge ruhig leuchten sonder Eitelkeit.
185
Seid weder vorlaut im Gespräch noch allzubreit;
Denn solches Wesen tadelt man an Frauen gern.
Bedürftig, fremd und flüchtig, gebt stets willig nach;
