Aeschylus Supplices 155

Anna Swanwick (Translator)

View: By Card
Chorus
Insatiate of battle, fierce and lewd
Ægyptos' race;-to one who knows I speak.
In timbered ships, blue-prowed, their rage to wreak,
Hither with many a follower, sable-hued,
743
In prosperous wrath they sped.

Yet if this may not be,
We, the dark race sun-smitten, we
Will speed with suppliant wands
To Zeus who rules below, with hospitable hands

Who welcomes all the dead from all the lands:
Yea, by our own hands strangled, we will go,
Spurned by Olympian gods, unto the gods below!

Willst du nicht, so flich' ich
Dunkle sonnverbrannte Schaar
Zum Schattengott,
Der die Todten allzumal
Gastlich hegt im Erdenschooß,

Fliehe hin mit grünem Zweig,
Durch den Strang mich tödtend,
Weil Olymps Götter nicht mein Fleh'n erhört.

drittes Epeisodion: 1.

- Ζη ὠκύπτεροι vgl. . ναυτίλων ὀχήματα Prom. 484, zu ἐν μέσῳ Eur.
