Aeschylus Supplices 148

Anna Swanwick (Translator)

View: By Card
Chorus
And let no man-destroying mischief lay
This town in ruins, arming civil feud,
And Ares tear-exciter, for the fray
Danceless and lyreless. May the brood
Of fell disease far from these burghers wing
1
Its joyless flight, and the Lykeian king
The nation's youth propitiously survey!

Notes on the current edition

Supplices

1. * Another reading gives—
"With gifts of honour may the altars blaze,
Crowded with envoys, who shall sound the praise
Of this well-ordered State.
Zeus let them hail, the Great,
The stranger's god, who fate
By law primeval sways."

erstes Epeisodion. 1.

κότον: τὸν τοῦ Διός bemerkt der Schol. mit Recht (vgl. 390, 487), aber diese nähere Bestimmung kann nach ἀνέρων nicht entbehrt werden; deshalb wird die Emendation Heimsäths θεῶν τ' ἄλευαι κότον richtig sein. Vgl. Hesych.
