Aeschylus Supplices 630

Theodore Alois Buckley (Translator)

Now, if ever, you gods sprung from Jove, hear us pouring forth prayers for desirable things for this race: that bold Mars may never cause to be consumed by fire the Pelasgian city, who with joyless cry mows down mortals in other plowed fields: since they have pitied us, and have passed a favorable decree; but they revere the suppliants of Jove, this band unenvied:

Hear us pour forth
A votive prayer for Argos' clan!—
Never may this Pelasgian earth,
Amid the fire-wrack, shrill the dismal cry
On Ares, ravening lord of fight,

Who in an alien harvest mows down man!
For lo, this land had pity on our plight,
And unto us were merciful and leal,
To us, the piteous flock, who at Zeus' altar kneel!

erstes Epeisodion. 1.

Phoen. 187. Vgl. Einl. S. 3.
