Mnesippos

Then let Zeus, the God of Friendship, witness that all I shall tell you I speak either of my own knowledge or having learned from others, with all the exactitude in my power, and adding nothing of my own to the story.

[His first story celebrates the friendship of Agathokles of Samos for Deinias of Ephesos. Deinias was a very rich young man, who was surrounded by evil companions, and soon wasted his whole substance in riotous living. Thereupon Agathokles, a man of moderate means and his friend from childhood, whose good advice had made him insupportable in the heyday of Deinias's prosperity, sold the house of his fathers and handed over the proceeds to his friend. Deinias finally killed two persons in a disgraceful embroglio, and was sentenced to transportation for life to one of the Cyclades. Agathokles accompanied him into exile, tended him through a long illness, and after his death continued to live in the island to be near the grave of his friend.]

Ἀγαθοκλῆς γὰρ οὗτος ὁ Σάμιος οὐ πρὸ πολλοῦ ἐγένετο, ἄριστος μὲν πρὸς φιλίαν, ὡς ἔδειξεν, τὰ ἄλλα δὲ οὐδὲν ἀμείνων Σαμίων τῶν πολλῶν οὔτε ἐς τὸ γένος οὔτε ἐς τὴν ἄλλην περιουσίαν. Δεινίᾳ δὲ τῷ Λύσωνος¹ Ἐφεσίῳ φίλος ἐκ παίδων ἦν. ὁ δὲ Δεινίας ἐπλούτει ἄρα εἰς ὑπερβολήν, καὶ ὥσπερ εἰκὸς νεόπλουτον ὄντα, πολλοὺς καὶ ἄλλους εἶχε περὶ ἑαυτόν, ἱκανοὺς μὲν συμπιεῖν καὶ πρὸς ἡδονὴν συνεῖναι, φιλίας δὲ πλεῖστον ὅσον ἀποδέοντας.

τέως μὲν οὖν ἐν τούτοις καὶ ὁ Ἀγαθοκλῆς ἐξητάζετο, καὶ συνῆν καὶ συνέπινεν αὐτοῖς οὐ πάνυ χαίρων τῇ τοιαύτῃ διατριβῇ, καὶ ὁ Δεινίας οὐδὲν αὐτὸν ἐντιμότερον εἶχεν τῶν κολάκων. τελευταῖον δὲ καὶ προσέκρουε τὰ πολλὰ ἐπιτιμῶν, καὶ φορτικὸς ἐδόκει ὑπομιμνήσκων ἀεὶ τῶν προγόνων καὶ φυλάττειν παραγγέλλων ἃ μετὰ πολλῶν καμάτων ὁ πατὴρ αὐτῷ κτησάμενος κατέλιπεν, ὥστε διὰ ταῦτα οὐδὲ ἐπὶ τοὺς κώμους ἀπῆγεν ἔτι αὐτόν, ἀλλὰ μόνος μετʼ ἐκείνων ἐκώμαζε, λανθάνειν πειρώμενος τὸν Ἀγαθοκλέα.

Well then, as Zeus Philios is my witness, I solemnly swear that whatever I shall tell you I will say either from my own knowledge or from information obtained of others with all the accuracy that was possible, without contributing any dramaturgy on my own part. And the first friendship of which I shall give you an account is that of Agathocles and Deinias, which has become far-famed among the Ionians. Agathocles of Samos, to whom I refer, lived not long ago, and was peerless in friendship, as he proved, but otherwise not at all superior to the general run of Samians qjther in family or in means. He and Deinias, the son of Lyson, of Ephesus, were friends from their boyhood. But Deinias turned out to be enormously rich; and as was natural in one whose wealth was new, he had many others about him who were well enough as boon companions and agreeable associates, but as far as could be from friends.

Well, for a time Agathocles was put to the test among them, associating with them and drinking with them, though he took little pleasure in that kind of pastime; and Deinias held him in no higher esteem than his toadies. But at length Agathocles began to give offence by rebuking him frequently, and. came to be considered a nuisance by reminding him always of his ancestors and admonishing him to keep what his father had acquired with much labour and left to him. Consequently Deinias no longer even took him along when he caroused about the town, but used to go alone with those others, trying to escape the eye of Agathocles.

Zeus the God of Friendship be my witness, that all I shall now relate is derived either from my own experience, or from such careful inquiry as I was able to make of others; and is free from all imaginative additions of my own. I will begin with the friendship of Agathocles and Dinias. The story is well known in Ionia. This Agathocles was a native of Samos, and lived not many years ago. Though his conduct showed him to be the best of friends, he was of no better family and in no better circumstances than the generality of the Samians.

From boyhood he had been the friend of Dinias, the son of Lyson, an Ephesian. Dinias, it seems, was enormously wealthy, and as his wealth was newly acquired, it is not to be wondered at that he had plenty of acquaintances besides Agathocles; persons who were quite qualified to share his pleasures, and to be his boon-companions, but who were very far indeed from being friends. For some time Agathocles—little as he cared for such a life—played his convivial part with the rest, Dinias making no distinction between him and the parasites. Finally, however, he took to finding fault with his friend’s conduct, and gave great offence: his continual allusions to Dinias’s ancestry, and his exhortations to him to husband the fortune which had cost his father such labour to acquire, seemed to his friend to be in indifferent taste. He gave up asking Agathocles to join in his revels, contented himself with the company of his parasites, and sought to elude his friend’s observation.
