HERA

A dreadful situation in all conscience and it wasn’t for nothing, Zeus, that you ranted over it.

ZEUS

And you supposed I was thinking of some Danaé or Antiope in all this confusion! Come now, Hermes and Hera and Athena, what can we do? You too, you know, must do your share of the planning.

HERMES

Ihold the question should be laid before the people; let’s call a meeting.

HERA

I think the same as he does.

ATHENA

But I think differently, father. Let’s not stir Heaven all up and show that you are upset over the business: manage it yourself in such a way that Timocles will win in the argument and Damis will be laughed to scorn and abandon the field.

HERMES

But people won’t fail to know of it, Zeus, as the philosophers are to have their dispute in public, and they will think you a tyrant if you don't call everyone into counsel on such important matters of common concern to all.

Ἥρα

Heracles

This is really a serious matter; your ranting was not so uncalled-for, Zeus.

Zeus

You fancied me thinking of some Danaé or Antiope; and this was the dread reality. Now, Hermes, Hera, Athene, what is our course? We await your contribution to our plans.

Hermagoras

My opinion is that an assembly be summoned and the community taken into counsel.

Heracles

And I concur.

Athene

Sire, I dissent entirely; you should not fill Heaven with apprehensions, nor let your own uneasiness be visible, but take private measures to assure Timocles’s victory and Damis’s being laughed out of court.

Hermagoras

It cannot bekept quiet, Zeus; the philosophers’ debate is public, and you will be accused of despotic methods, if you maintain reserve on a matter of so great and general interest.

Hera

Really this is very dreadful, and you were not so far wrong, Zeus, in addressing us in tragic vein.

Zeus

And yet you thought it was some Danae or Antiope that I was thinking about in such distress. Well, Hermes and Hera and Athene, what would be best? Take your turns in helping me to discover.

Hermes

I for my part say that an assembly ought to be called for open discussion.

Hera

I think precisely as he does.

Athene

But it strikes me just the other way, father. I do not think you ought to involve all heaven in your embarrassment, or show your own alarm at the affair; but make your arrangements privately so that Timokles may triumph and Damis be laughed out of court.

Hermes

But, Zeus, this course will not be unperceived, for the philosophers will hold their tournament in public, and you will be accused of Caesarism if you do not let all have a voice in matters so weighty and common to all.
